Abstract

A tubular member is sized and configured to establish an access path to bone having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone. The tubular member includes a distal end portion having at least one opening. A structure is sized and configured to be carried by the tubular member and controllably advanced through the at least one opening to define a cutting surface that projects outside the distal end portion. The cutting surface has a dimension capable of cutting cancellous bone in response to rotation of the tubular member within the cancellous bone.

Claims

1. A system comprising

a tubular member sized and configured to establish an access path to bone having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone, the tubular member including a distal end portion having at least one opening, and

a structure sized and configured to be carried by the tubular member and controllably advanced through the at least one opening to define a cutting surface that projects outside the distal end portion and that has a dimension capable of cutting cancellous bone in response to rotation of the tubular member within the cancellous bone.

2. A system according to claim 1

further including a tool to convey bone filling material into cancellous bone cut by the cutting surface.

3. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a curved configuration.

4. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface defines at least a portion of a loop.

5. A system according to claim 1

wherein the tubular member and structure cooperate to permit controlled advancement of the structure to form cutting surfaces having different dimensions.

6. A system according to claim 1

wherein the tubular member and structure cooperate to permit controlled retraction of the cutting surface essentially fully within the tubular member.

7. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a metallic material.

8. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a plastic material.

9. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a shape memory material.

10. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a round cross section.

11. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a rectilinear cross section.

12. A system according to claim 1

wherein the cutting surface comprises a filament.

13. A system according to claim 1

wherein at least a portion of the cutting surface is radiopaque.

14. A system according to claim 1

wherein at least a portion of the cutting surface includes a material that permits remote visualization of the cutting surface.

15. A method comprising

selecting a bone having an interior volume occupied, at least in part, by cancellous bone,

deploying a tubular member into the cancellous bone,

advancing from the tubular member a structure that projects as a cutting surface outside the tubular member, and

rotating the tubular member to cut cancellous bone by rotation of the cutting surface.

16. A method according to claim 15

further including conveying a bone filling material into cancellous bone cut by the cutting surface.

17. A method according to claim 15

further including adjusting a dimension of the cutting surface.

18. A method according to claim 15

further including visualizing the cutting surface from outside the vertebral body.

19. A method according to claim 15

further including synchronizing rotation of the tubular member and advancement of the structure from the tubular member.

20. A method according to claim 15

wherein the cutting surface comprises a curved configuration.

21. A method according to claim 15

further including controlled retracting the cutting surface essentially fully within the tubular member.

22. A method according to claim 15

wherein the selected bone comprises a vertebral body.
