Abstract

A method of fire prevention/extinguishing for an aircraft runway is provided where the method includes: providing a supply of fire preventing/extinguishing chemical; disposing a piping system beneath a top surface of the runway and having an inlet in communication with the supply and an outlet in communication with the top surface; and delivering the fire preventing/extinguishing chemicals from the supply through the piping system and outlet to the top surface.

Claims

1. A fire prevention/extinguishing system for use on an aircraft runway, the system comprising:

a supply of fire preventing/extinguishing chemical;

a piping system disposed beneath a top surface of the runway and having an inlet in communication with the supply and an outlet in communication with the top surface; and

a pump for delivering the fire preventing/extinguishing chemicals from the supply through the piping system and outlet to the top surface.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the top surface comprises a plurality of panels movably disposed on the runway.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the piping system outlet comprises a plurality of nozzles disposed beneath the plurality of panels and configured to deliver the fire preventing/extinguishing chemical to the top surface.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the piping system is disposed within a solid material under the top surface.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the solid material is a conventional runway.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the solid material is collapsible concrete.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein the piping system outlet is disposed at the top surface of the runway.

8. The system of claim 7, further comprising a member disposed at the outlet to prevent debris from entering the piping system.

9. The system of claim 7, further comprising a check valve to prevent debris from entering the piping system.

10. A method of fire prevention/extinguishing for an aircraft runway, the method comprising:

providing a supply of fire preventing/extinguishing chemical;

disposing a piping system beneath a top surface of the runway and having an inlet in communication with the supply and an outlet in communication with the top surface; and

delivering the fire preventing/extinguishing chemicals from the supply through the piping system and outlet to the top surface.
