Abstract

The disclosure relates generally to methods and apparatus for protecting against counterfeit products and for methods and apparatus for providing counterfeiting protection for an object. In one embodiment, the method includes the steps of: (a) accessing an object including an identifying mark having a first portion and a second portion wherein said second portion includes an encrypted feature; (b) reading the first portion to thereby obtain a first set of information; (c) transmitting the first set of information to a remote location; (d) receiving from the remote location a second set of information; and (e) reading the second portion using the second set of information to thereby determine the authenticity of the object.

Claims

1. An object comprising:

an identifying mark affixed to said object;

said identifying mark having an identifier feature including at least one of;

the object'"'"'s designation, the object'"'"'s type, the object'"'"'s batch number, location of manufacture, date of manufacture, time of manufacture, date of expiration, and at least one of the object'"'"'s ingredients; and

said identifying mark having an encrypted feature with an attribute chosen from the group consisting of;

shape, size, dimensionality, material, location on the object, and spectral fingerprint.

2. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature includes at least one of a fluorescent material and a Raman-scattering material.

3. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature is invisible in the visual wavelength range.

4. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature includes a two-dimensional barcode.

5. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature includes a three-dimensional barcode.

6. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a fluorescent material having a first spectral fingerprint at a first location within the encrypted feature and a second spectral fingerprint at a second location within the encrypted feature.

7. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a first fluorescent material having a first spectral fingerprint and a second fluorescent material having a second spectral fingerprint.

8. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint at a first location within the encrypted feature and a second spectral fingerprint at a second location within the encrypted feature.

9. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a first Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint and a second Raman-scattering material having a second spectral fingerprint.

10. The object of claim 1 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint and a fluorescent material having a second spectral fingerprint.

11. The object of claim 1 wherein the object is chosen from the group consisting of:

pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biological material, food, food additives, spices, cosmetics, perfumes, paper money, coins, credit cards, digital video discs, compact discs, audio tapes, video tapes, electronic devices, and works of art.

12. The object of claim 1 wherein a first encrypted feature affixed to a first object is different than a second encrypted feature affixed to a second object.

13. The object of claim 1 wherein one of the identifier feature and the encrypted feature is affixed to a package for the object.

14. The object of claim 1 wherein a dimension for the encrypted feature is approximately one micrometer.

15. An object identifying mark comprising:

a first portion having an identifier feature including at least one of;

the object'"'"'s designation, the object'"'"'s type, the object'"'"'s batch number, location of manufacture, date of manufacture, time of manufacture, date of expiration, and at least one of the object'"'"'s ingredients; and

a second portion including an encrypted feature with an attribute chosen from the group consisting of;

shape, size, dimensionality, material, location on the object, and spectral fingerprint.

16. The object-identifying mark of claim 15 wherein the encrypted feature includes at least one of a fluorescent material and a Raman-scattering material.

17. The object-identifying mark of claim 16 wherein the encrypted feature includes a spectral fingerprint of at least one of said fluorescent material and said Raman-scattering material.

18. The object-identifying mark of claim 15 wherein the encrypted feature is invisible in the visual wavelength range.

19. The object-identifying mark of claim 15 wherein the encrypted feature includes one of a two-dimensional bar code and a three-dimensional bar code.

20. The object-identifying mark of claim 15 wherein a dimension for the encrypted feature is approximately one micrometer.

21. In an object having a first mark affixed to the object or to the packaging for the object where the first mark includes information for identifying the object, the improvement comprising placing a second mark on the object or the packaging for the object wherein the second mark includes an encrypted feature with an attribute chosen from the group consisting of:

shape, size, dimensionality, material, location on the object, and spectral fingerprint.

22. The object of claim 21 wherein said first mark includes an identifier feature including at least one of:

the object'"'"'s designation, the object'"'"'s type, the object'"'"'s batch number, location of manufacture, date of manufacture, time of manufacture, date of expiration, and at least one of the object'"'"'s ingredients.

23. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature includes at least one of a fluorescent material and a Raman-scattering material.

24. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature is invisible in the visual wavelength range.

25. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature includes a two-dimensional barcode.

26. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature includes a three-dimensional barcode.

27. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a fluorescent material having a first spectral fingerprint at a first location within the encrypted feature and a second spectral fingerprint at a second location within the encrypted feature.

28. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a first fluorescent material having a first spectral fingerprint and a second fluorescent material having a second spectral fingerprint.

29. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint at a first location within the encrypted feature and a second spectral fingerprint at a second location within the encrypted feature.

30. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a first Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint and a second Raman-scattering material having a second spectral fingerprint.

31. The object of claim 21 wherein the encrypted feature comprises a Raman-scattering material having a first spectral fingerprint and a fluorescent material having a second spectral fingerprint.

32. The object of claim 21 wherein the object is chosen from the group consisting of:

pharmaceuticals, chemicals, biological material, food, food additives, spices, cosmetics, perfumes, paper money, coins, credit cards, digital video discs, compact discs, audio tapes, video tapes, electronic devices, and works of art.
