Abstract

A digital video editing and playback system and methods of editing and playing back digital video are provided. The system includes a video processor adapted to receive video segments from multiple sources. The video segments include synchronization information. The video processor includes software instructions adapted to be executed by the video processor. The software instructions are adapted to evaluate the synchronization information from various video segments and to form associations between video segments from different sources that correspond to a common event.

Claims

1. A video editing system comprising:

a video processor adapted to receive video segments from multiple sources, said video segments including synchronization information; and

a computer readable medium storing software instructions adapted to be executed by the processor, the software instructions adapted to evaluate the synchronization information from the video segments and form associations between video segments from different sources that correspond to a common event.

2. The video editing system of claim 1 wherein the synchronization information comprises time stamp value indicating at time at which said video segments were recorded.

3. The video editing system of claim 2 wherein the software instructions are further adapted to synchronize the time stamp values by adjusting the stamp values of video segments corresponding to a common event to a common time reference frame.

4. The video system of claim 1 further comprising a user interface adapted to display associated video segments corresponding to the same event.

5. The video editing system of claim 4 wherein the user interface is further adapted to allow a user to manually form association between video segments from different sources.

6. A computer readable medium having computer readable code for editing digital video stored thereon, when executed by a computer, the computer readable code adapted to perform the steps of:

receiving a first plurality of video segments from a first source and a second plurality of video segments from a second source, each video segment including a time identifier;

evaluating the time identifier associated with a video segment from said first plurality of video segments with the time identifier associated with a video segment from said second plurality of video segments; and

forming an association between the video segment from the first plurality of video segments and the video segment from the second plurality of video segments when the time identifier associated with the video segment from the first plurality of video segments corresponds with the time identifier associated with the video segment from the second plurality of video segments.

7. The computer readable medium of claim 6 wherein the time identifier comprises a time stamp indicating a time at which the video segment was recorded.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 6 wherein the computer readable code is further adapted to perform the step of displaying the video segments for which an association has been formed.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 6 wherein the computer readable code is further adapted to perform the step of synchronizing the time identifiers of the video segments from the first source with the time identifiers of the video segments from the second source.

10. A system for creating a video and audio stream comprising:

a video storage device for receiving and storing a plurality of video segments;

a controller for entering video playback commands;

a video playback device for selectively playing video segments stored in the video storage device according to video playback commands entered in the controller;

a voice recorder; and

a video and audio assembler for assembling a video stream and an accompanying voice overlay, wherein the video stream comprises video segments selectively played by the video playback device according to commands entered in the controller, and the accompanying voice overlay comprises a voice signal recorded by the voice recorder as the video segments are selectively played according to the video playback commands entered in the controller.

11. The system for creating a video and audio stream of claim 10 wherein the audio overlay is reproduced in synchronization with the video segments according the playback commands entered in the controller.

The system for creating a video and audio stream of claim 10 further comprising a user interface including a preview window allowing a user to view the video segments according to the playback commands as the playback commands are entered into the controller and as the voice signal is recorded by the voice recorder.

13. A system for playback of video data stored on a computer readable medium comprising:

a computer adapted to read the video data stored on a computer readable medium;

playback instructions stored on the computer for playback of the video data;

a display for displaying the video data during playback; and

an input device for accepting control commands for controlling the playback of the video data, the input device being connectable to the computer via an interface.
