Abstract

An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

Claims

1. A glucose detection system, comprising:

a glucose sensor comprising a working electrode and glucose-responsive enzyme; and

a sensor control unit configured to receive one or more signals from the glucose sensor, the sensor control unit comprising a power source for powering the sensor control unit, the sensor control unit configured to transition from one of a low power state or no power state to a high power state prior to the sensor control unit receiving the one or more signals from the glucose sensor.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor includes a glucose flux limiting layer adjacent at least a portion of the sensor.

3. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor control unit includes a transmitter to transmit glucose-related information.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein the sensor control unit includes a transceiver for bi-directional communication.

5. The system of claim 1, wherein the sensor control unit includes a receiver to receive glucose-related information.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the power source is self-activating.

7. The system of claim 1, wherein the power source is contained in a water resistant or water tight unit.

8. The system of claim 1, wherein the power source is a battery.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the battery has a thickness of 0.5 mm or less.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the battery has a lifetime of at least thirty days.

11. The system of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the sensor is transcutaneously positionable in an individual.

12. The system of claim 1 wherein the sensor control unit is configured to be in a sleep mode during the one low power state.

13. A method of providing a glucose detection device, comprising:

providing a power source to power a sensor control unit;

assembling a sensor control unit to communicate with a glucose sensor; and

configuring the sensor control unit to transition from one of a low power state or no power state to a high power state when the sensor control unit is in electrical contact with the glucose sensor.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the glucose sensor includes a glucose flux limiting layer adjacent at least a portion of the sensor.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the control unit includes a transmitter to transmit glucose-related information.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the power source is self-activating.

17. The method of claim 13, including containing the power source in a water resistant or water tight unit.

18. The method of claim 13, including transcutaneously positioning at least a portion of the glucose sensor in an individual.

19. The method of claim 13 including configuring the sensor control unit to be in a sleep mode during the one low power state.
