Abstract

Apparatus and methods include the distribution of a plurality of content, at least one of which is tagged with descriptive metadata. Further, the apparatus and methods include selecting content from the plurality of content based on a match between a personalized content preference descriptor stored on the device and the tagged content. Thus, the selected content represents content likely to be applicable or relevant, and/or of interest, to the user associated with the personalized content preference descriptor.

Claims

1. A method of receiving content, comprising:

obtaining, on a wireless device, a personalized content preference descriptor based on user characteristic information on the wireless device;

obtaining, on the wireless device, a predetermined content descriptor corresponding to one of a plurality of content;

obtaining, on the wireless device, a multicast transmission of the plurality of content associated with a content supplier;

selecting, at the wireless device, one from the plurality of content based on a match between at least a portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor and the personalized content preference descriptor; and

processing, on the wireless device, the selected content.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises selecting the personalized content preference descriptor from a plurality of predetermined content descriptors defined by the content supplier.

The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises selecting the personalized content preference descriptor from a plurality of predetermined content descriptors corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of services associated with the content supplier, wherein at least two of the plurality of services are associated with a different plurality of predetermined content descriptors.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises generating the personalized content preference descriptor based on at least one of psychographic information, information associated with a predetermined social network of users, and information associated with predetermined users within a predetermined geographic area.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein generating the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises executing at least a predetermined one of an algorithm, a decision-making routine, fuzzy logic, a heuristic method and a neural network.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises generating the personalized content preference descriptor based on at least one of local time, a wireless network carrier associated with the respective wireless device and a device characteristic.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein generating the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises executing at least one of a predetermined algorithm, a predetermined decision-making routine, predetermined fuzzy logic, a predetermined heuristic method and a predetermined neural network.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the personalized content preference descriptor further comprises obtaining a service-specific personalized content preference descriptor, and wherein selecting further comprises selecting based on the service-specific personalized content preference descriptor and further based on a respective service associated with the obtained multicast transmission.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein obtaining the multicast transmission further comprises receiving the plurality of content within a predetermined one of a plurality of flows, and wherein processing the selected content further comprises saving the selected content.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein selecting further comprises determining if at least the portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor achieves a predetermined matching threshold.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein processing the selected content further comprises presenting the selected content.

12. A computer software product comprising:

a computer-readable medium including;

a first set of codes for obtaining, on a wireless device, a personalized content preference descriptor based on user characteristic information on the wireless device;

a second set of codes for obtaining, on the wireless device, a predetermined content descriptor corresponding to one of a plurality of content;

a third set of codes for obtaining, on the wireless device, a multicast transmission of the plurality of content associated with a content supplier;

a fourth set of codes for selecting, at the wireless device, one from the plurality of content based on a match between at least a portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor and the personalized content preference descriptor; and

a fifth set of codes for processing, on the wireless device, the selected content.

13. At least one processor configured to perform the actions of:

obtaining, on a wireless device, a personalized content preference descriptor based on user characteristic information on the wireless device;

obtaining, on the wireless device, a predetermined content descriptor corresponding to one of a plurality of content;

obtaining, on the wireless device, a multicast transmission of the plurality of content associated with a content supplier;

selecting, at the wireless device, one from the plurality of content based on a match between at least a portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor and the personalized content preference descriptor; and

processing, on the wireless device, the selected content.

14. A wireless device, comprising:

means for obtaining a personalized content preference descriptor based, on user characteristic information on the wireless device;

means for obtaining a predetermined content descriptor corresponding to one of a plurality of content;

means for obtaining a multicast transmission of the plurality of content associated with a content supplier;

means for selecting one from the plurality of content based on a match between at least a portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor and the personalized content preference descriptor; and

means for processing the selected content.

15. A wireless device, comprising:

a memory comprising a personalized content preference descriptor, a predetermined content descriptor and a content selection engine, wherein the personalized content preference descriptor is based on user characteristic information on the wireless device, wherein the predetermined content descriptor corresponds to one of a plurality of content, and wherein the content selection engine is operable to select at least one from the plurality of content based on a match between at least a portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor and the personalized content preference descriptor;

a communications module operable to obtain a multicast transmission of the plurality of content associated with a content supplier; and

a processor in communication with the memory and the communications module, wherein the processor is operable to execute the content selection engine to select one from the plurality of content, and wherein the processor is operable to further process the selected content.

16. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the personalized content preference descriptor is selected from a plurality of predetermined content descriptors defined by the content supplier.

17. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the personalized content preference descriptor is selected from a plurality of predetermined content descriptors corresponding to a respective one of a plurality of services associated with the content supplier, wherein at least two of the plurality of services are associated with a different plurality of predetermined content descriptors.

18. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the memory further comprises a preference descriptor generator operable to generate the personalized content preference descriptor based on at least one of psychographic information, information associated with a predetermined social network of users, and information associated with predetermined users within a predetermined geographic area.

19. The wireless device of claim 18, wherein the preference descriptor generator further comprises at least a predetermined one of an algorithm, a decision-making routine, fuzzy logic, a heuristic method and a neural network executable by the processor to determine the personalized content preference descriptor.

20. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the memory further comprises a preference descriptor generator operable to generate the personalized content preference descriptor based on at least one of local time, a wireless network carrier associated with the respective wireless device and a device characteristic.

21. The wireless device of claim 20, wherein the preference descriptor generator further comprises at least a predetermined one of an algorithm, a decision-making routine, fuzzy logic, a heuristic method and a neural network executable by the processor to determine the personalized content preference descriptor.

22. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the personalized content preference descriptor varies based on a respective service associated with the multicast transmission.

23. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the content selection engine is further operable to determine if at least the portion of the respective predetermined content descriptor achieves a predetermined matching threshold.

24. The wireless device of claim 15, wherein the communications module is further operable to receive the plurality of content within a predetermined one of a plurality of flows, and wherein the processor is further operable to save the selected content in the memory.

25. The wireless device of claim 15, further comprising an output mechanism, and wherein the processor is further operable to present the selected content via the output mechanism.

26. A method of distributing content, comprising:

obtaining, on a distribution system, a plurality of predetermined content descriptors defined by a content supplier;

obtaining, at the distribution system, a plurality of content;

obtaining, at the distribution system, an association between at least one of the plurality of predetermined content descriptors and one of the plurality of content; and

multicasting, from the distribution system, the plurality of content and the association to a plurality of devices, wherein the association is operative to cause the selective processing of the one of the plurality of content on one of the devices based on a match between the associated predetermined content descriptor and a personalized content preference descriptor stored at the respective device.

27. A computer software product comprising:

a computer-readable medium including;

a first set of codes for obtaining, on a distribution system, a plurality of predetermined content descriptors defined by a content supplier;

a second set of codes for obtaining, at the distribution system, a plurality of content;

a third set of codes for obtaining, at the distribution system, an association between at least one of the plurality of predetermined content descriptors and one of the plurality of content; and

a fourth set of codes for multicasting, from the distribution system, the plurality of content and the association to a plurality of devices, wherein the association is operative to cause the selective processing of the one of the plurality of content on one of the devices based on a match between the associated predetermined content descriptor and a personalized content preference descriptor stored at the respective device.

28. At least one processor configured to perform the actions of:

obtaining, on a distribution system, a plurality of predetermined content descriptors defined by a content supplier;

obtaining, at the distribution system, a plurality of content;

obtaining, at the distribution system, an association between at least one of the plurality of predetermined content descriptors and one of the plurality of content; and

multicasting, from the distribution system, the plurality of content and the association to a plurality of devices, wherein the association is operative to cause the selective processing of the one of the plurality of content on one of the devices based on a match between the associated predetermined content descriptor and a personalized content preference descriptor stored at the respective device.

29. An apparatus for distributing content, comprising:

a memory comprising a plurality of content, a plurality of predetermined content descriptors, and an association between at least one of the plurality of content and at least one of the plurality of predetermined content descriptors, wherein the plurality of predetermined content descriptors are defined by a content supplier;

a multicast mechanism operable to transmit the plurality of content and the association to a plurality of devices;

a processor operable to execute the multicast mechanism to initiate the transmission of the plurality of content and the association, wherein the association is operative to cause the selective processing of the at least one of the plurality of content on one of the devices based on a match between the associated predetermined content descriptor and a personalized content preferences descriptor stored at the respective device.
