Abstract

A computer database record architecture is disclosed. The database record provides a repository for a unique Universal Media Code (UMC) key identifier. The UMC key identifier identifies a media file, and is made up of a unique owner ID, a unique media ID and a single check digit. The database record also includes a Universal Resource Locator (URL) related to the media file identified by the UMC. The database record further includes a wholesale and suggested retail price for playing or downloading the media, one or more encryption keys and security passwords, other information such as owner name and bank depository information associated with the media, a media fingerprint, a description and artistic credits relating to the media, and optional information relating to the media.

Claims

1. A computer database record architecture for controlling access and distribution of digital media content, the record architecture comprising:

one or more unique universal media code identifier fields that collectively identify an item of digital media content;

a location field associated with the digital media content item and the universal media code identifier;

one or more price fields associated with the digital media content item; and

one or both of encryption keys and security passwords fields.

2. The computer database record architecture of claim 1 wherein the location field comprises a uniform resource locator field.

3. The computer database record architecture of claim 1 further comprising one or more fields relating to an owner of the digital media content.

4. The computer database record architecture of claim 3 wherein the one or more fields relating to the owner of the digital media content include one or more of the following:

a name field, an ownership percentage field, an address field, a telephone field, a tax identification number field, a bank routing field, and a bank account field.

5. The computer database record architecture of claim 3 wherein the record architecture is configured to facilitate a plurality of different owners to be represented in a single database record.

6. The computer database record architecture of claim 1 wherein the one or more unique universal media code identifier fields that collectively identify the item of digital media content include one or more of a publisher code field and a media code field.

9. The computer database record architecture of claim 1 further comprising a media description field.

10. The computer database record architecture of claim 1 further comprising one or more artistic credit fields containing artistic credit keys relating to the media file.

11. The computer database record architecture of claim 1, wherein the one or more universal media code identifier fields include a unique owner identifier, a unique media identifier, and a check digit.
