Abstract

An exemplary medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient is disclosed, comprising an antimicrobial material comprising at least one metal and an agent that inhibits diffusion of the at least one metal from the antimicrobial material. The antimicrobial material comprises a coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device. Methods for preparing medical devices and methods of using the medical devices having the antimicrobial material are also disclosed.

Claims

1. A medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient, the medical device comprising:

an antimicrobial material comprising;

at least one metal; and

an agent that inhibits diffusion of the at least one metal from the antimicrobial material.

2. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the antimicrobial material comprises a coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of a catheter.

3. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the at least one metal is selected from:

silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

4. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

5. The medical device of claim 2, wherein the coating further comprises an antioxidant.

6. A medical device for subcutaneous disposal at least partially within a patient, the medical device comprising:

a catheter;

an antimicrobial coating formed over at least a portion of a surface of a catheter, the antimicrobial coating comprising;

silver; and

activated carbon.

7. The medical device of claim 6, wherein the catheter has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

8. A method of manufacturing a medical device, the method comprising:

providing a medical device; and

forming a coating over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device, wherein the coating comprises an antimicrobial material including at least one metal and an agent that slows diffusion of the at least one metal from the coating.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the agent is activated carbon.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the metal is selected from:

silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

12. The method of claim 8, wherein the coating further comprises an antioxidant.

13. A method of reducing nosocomial infections in a patient, comprising:

providing a medical device further comprising a coating over at least a portion of a surface of the medical device, wherein the coating comprises an antimicrobial material including at least one metal and an agent that slows diffusion of the at least one metal from the coating; and

inserting the medical device so that the coating is subcutaneously disposed at least partially within a patient.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the at least one metal is selected from:

silver, copper, gold, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, nickel, gallium, bismuth, cadmium, chromium, thallium, platinum, palladium, salts thereof, and mixtures thereof.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the agent that slows diffusion is activated carbon.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the coating further comprises an antioxidant.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein the medical device has a modulus of elasticity of between about 90 and about 10,000 psi/inch.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein the medical device includes a catheter.
