Abstract

Generally, the present invention includes a segmented endoprosthesis for delivery into a lumen of a body. The endoprostheses can be configured to include a plurality of longitudinally-adjacent annular elements joined together with a shock-absorbing inter-connector such that adjacent annular elements can move independently from each other. Also, the segmented endoprosthesis can be comprised of a plurality of sub-endoprostheses that are connected or in contact with each other during delivery, and separate from each other after being deployed. The segmented endoprosthesis can provide improved deliverability, strength, flexibility, and/or functionality during and after deployment. The use of a segmented endoprosthesis can combine the characteristics of multiple small endoprostheses into a standard- or regular-sized endoprosthesis.

Claims

1. A segmented endoprosthesis comprising:

a first annular element;

a second annular element adjacent to the first annular element; and

inter-connector coupled to the first annular element and second annular element, the inter-connector reducing the forces transferred from the first annual element to the second annular element during placement within a body lumen.

2. An endoprosthesis as in claim 1, wherein the shock absorbing inter-connector is comprised of at least two bending members.

3. An endoprosthesis as in claim 2, wherein each of the at least two bending members is comprised of at least one bending point.

4. An endoprosthesis as in claim 3, further comprising a first coupling that couples the inter-connector to the first annular element and a second shock coupling that couples the inter-connector to the second annular element.

5. An endoprosthesis as in claim 4, wherein the first coupling couples a first end of each of the at least two bending members to the first annular element, and the second coupling couples a second end of each of the at least two bending members to the second annular element.

6. An endoprosthesis as in claim 5, wherein each of the at least two bending member is resiliently flexible and configured to expand or collapse an angle between the two bending members.

7. An endoprosthesis as in claim 5, wherein the at least two bending points, first coupling, and second shock coupling cooperate as a collapsible and expandable inter-connector.

8. An endoprosthesis as in claim 7, wherein the inter-connector is in the shape of a diamond that can collapse longitudinally during deployment of the endoprosthesis.

9. A segmented endoprosthesis comprising:

a first annular element having a first end,

a second annular element having a second end adjacent to the first end of the first annular element; and

a first and second flexibly-resilient inter-connectors coupled to the first annular element and the second annular element;

a second flexibly-resilient inter-connector coupled to the first annular element and the second annular element, the first inter-connector collapsing and the second inter-connector expanding when the endoprosthesis bends in a first direction, and the second inter-connector collapsing and the first inter-connector expanding, when the endoprosthesis bends in a second direction opposite to the first direction.

10. An endoprosthesis as in claim 9, wherein the first and second flexibly-resilient inter-connectors are each comprised of at least one collapsible, expandable shock-absorbing element.

11. An endoprosthesis as in claim 9 wherein the first and second flexibly resilient inter-connectors are comprised of a diamond shock absorber.

12. An endoprosthesis as in claim 9, wherein the first and second flexibly resilient inter-connectors are each comprised of at least two bending shocks, wherein each of the at least two bending shocks includes a bending point.

13. An endoprosthesis as in claim 12, further comprising:

a first coupling that resiliently and flexibly couples a first end of the first flexibly-resilient inter-connector to the first annular element;

a second coupling that resiliently and flexibly couples a second end of the first flexibly-resilient inter-connection to the second annular element;

a third coupling that resiliently and flexibly couples a first end of the second flexibly-resilient inter-connector to the first annular element; and

a fourth coupling that resiliently and flexibly couples a second end of the second flexibly-resilient inter-connector to the second annular element.

14. A segmented endoprosthesis comprising:

a first annular element having a plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors at a first end; and

a second annular element having a plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors at a second end, wherein at least one of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors are releasably coupled with at least one of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors when the segmented endoprosthesis is in a delivery orientation.

15. An endoprosthesis as in claim 14, wherein each of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors includes a first slidable surface and each of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors includes a second slidable surface, wherein the first slidable surface is in slidable and/or separable contact with the second slidable surface when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation.

An endoprosthesis as in claim 15, wherein each of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors includes a third slidable surface and each of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors includes a fourth slidable surface, wherein the third slidable surface is in slidable and/or separable contact with the fourth slidable surface when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation.

17. An endoprosthesis as in claim 16, wherein at least one of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors is releasably coupled with two of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors.

18. An endoprosthesis as in claim 14, wherein the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors decouple from the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors when the endoprosthesis is opened to a deployed orientation.

19. An endoprosthesis as in claim 14, wherein the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors decouple from the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors when one of the first or second annular elements is radially expanded.

20. An endoprosthesis as in claim 19, wherein each of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors has a first surface that faces the second annular element and each of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors has a second bumper surface that faces the first annular element.

21. An endoprosthesis as in claim 14, wherein each of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors has a first arm and each of the plurality of second decouplable inter-connectors has a second arm.

22. An endoprosthesis as in claim 21, when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation the first arm is disposed between the second arm and the second annular element, and the second arm is disposed between the first arm and the first annular element.

23. An endoprosthesis as in claim 22, wherein at least one of the plurality of first decouplable inter-connectors and at least one of the plurality of the second decouplable inter-connectors has a T-shape or an anchor-shape.

24. A segmented endoprosthesis comprising:

a first annular element having a plurality of first bumpers at a first end; and

a second annular element having a plurality of second bumpers at a second end, wherein at least one of the plurality of second bumpers abuts with at least one of the plurality of first bumpers when the segmented endoprosthesis is in a delivery orientation.

25. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein each of the plurality of first bumpers includes a first bumper surface and each of the plurality of second bumpers includes a second bumper surface, wherein the first bumper surface is in slidable and/or separable contact with the second bumper surface when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation.

26. An endoprosthesis as in claim 25, wherein at least one of the plurality of first bumpers transmits a longitudinal force from the first annular element to at least one of the plurality of second bumpers when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation and a force is applied to the first annular element.

27. An endoprosthesis as in claim 26, wherein at least one of the plurality of first bumpers separates from at least one of the plurality of second bumpers when the endoprosthesis in the delivery orientation is delivered around a luminal corner.

28. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein all of the plurality of first bumpers separate from all of the plurality of second bumpers when the endoprosthesis is expanded to a deployed orientation.

29. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein at least one of the plurality of first bumpers remains in contact with at least one of the plurality of second bumpers when the endoprosthesis is expanded to a deployed orientation.

30. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein each of the plurality of first bumpers has a first arm and each of the plurality of second bumpers has a second arm.

31. An endoprosthesis as in claim 30, when the endoprosthesis is in the delivery orientation the first arm is disposed adjacent and in contact with the second arm so as to contact the first annular element to the second annular element in a manner that the first and second annular elements can be delivered together through a lumen.

32. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein at least one of the plurality of first bumpers and at least one of the plurality of the second bumpers has a T-shape or L-shape.

33. An endoprosthesis as in claim 24, wherein at least one of the plurality of first bumpers is configured as an extended member, and at least one of the plurality of second bumpers is configured as a receiving member that receives the extended member when the endoprosthesis is in a delivery orientation.
