Abstract

A multi-dimensional system for assessing, coding, quantifying, displaying, integrating and communicating information relating to patient health and perioperative risk includes a mechanism for inputting patient information and providing an output relating to the patient health and perioperative risk. The output includes a score for the physical condition of the patient, a score for the degree of expected surgical risk and invasiveness, a score for other vital assessments of perioperative complexity, and alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning.

Claims

1. A multi-dimensional system for assessing, coding, quantifying, displaying, integrating and communicating information relating to patient health and perioperative risk, comprising:

means for inputting patient information and providing an output relating to the patient health and perioperative risk, wherein the output includes;

a score for the physical condition of the patient;

a score for the degree of expected surgical risk and invasiveness;

a score for other vital assessments of perioperative complexity; and

alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the score for other vital assessments of perioperative complexity include scores for potential airway difficulty composed of physical factors primarily affecting ventilation and intubation-related factors.

3. The system according to claim 1, wherein the alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning further includes letter codes for risk indicators.

4. The system according to claim 3, wherein the alphanumeric codes for risk indicators includes scores for interim information &

issues and needs that should be addressed.

5. The system according to claim 4, wherein the interim information &

issues score is repeatedly updated.

6. The system according to claim 1, wherein the alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning further includes optional scoring.

7. The system according to claim 1, wherein output is presented with branched-chain logic.

8. The system according to claim 1, wherein the score for the physical condition is identified by the ASA PS of medical condition.

9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the ASA PS is modified in a body system-specific basis.

10. The system according to claim 1, wherein the score for the degree of surgical risk provides for body system-specific information.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein output includes five scores.

12. The system according to claim 11, wherein the five scores relate to ASA PS, surgical risk/invasiveness, physical factors primarily affecting ventilation, intubation predictors, risk indicators that identify items of potential anesthesia-related concern.

13. The system according to claim 1, wherein the output is displayed on a graphical user interface of a computer system.

14. The system according to claim 1, wherein the score includes scored features, within a feature category of a given body subsystem, which is a part of a body system.

15. The system according to claim 1, wherein the output includes scoring relating to multiple body systems.

16. The system according to claim 1, further including a conversion dictionary.

17. A method for providing an integrative mechanism of quantitative assessment and communication, comprising the following steps:

inputting patient information;

processing the patient information;

providing an output relating to patient health and perioperative risk, wherein the output includes;

a score for the physical condition of the patient;

a score for the degree of expected surgical risk and invasiveness;

a score for other vital assessments of perioperative complexity; and

alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning.

18. The method according to claim 17, wherein the score for other vital assessments of perioperative complexity include scores for potential airway difficulty composed of physical factors primarily affecting ventilation and intubation-related factors.

19. The method according to claim 17, wherein the alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning further includes letter codes for risk indicators.

20. The method according to claim 19, wherein the alphanumeric codes for risk indicators includes scores for interim information &

issues and needs that should be addressed.

21. The method according to claim 17, wherein the alphanumeric codes for other factors that may require special preoperative preparation and planning further includes optional scoring.

22. The method according to claim 17, wherein output is presented with branched-chain logic.

23. The method according to claim 17, wherein the score for the physical condition is identified by the ASA PS of medical condition, and the ASA PS is modified in a body system-specific basis.

24. The method according to claim 17, wherein the score for the degree of surgical risk provides for body system-specific information.

25. The method according to claim 17, wherein the score includes scored features, within a feature category of a given body subsystem, which is a part of a body system.
