Abstract

A mechanism minimizes the management issues of the participant objects of the logical target set, such as an application set. The mechanism maps the current physical implementation. The mechanism then identifies the target and extraneous object set locations to facilitate isolation. Thereafter, the mechanism optimizes the logical target set placement for best manageability and performance. The mechanism minimizes the management issues by providing a small application footprint. This is accomplished by placing the object set on the fewest necessary volumes to facilitate both application performance and independence of administrative action.

Claims

1. A computer implemented method for resolving intermixed application objects in storage, the computer implemented method comprising:

identifying an application set, wherein the application set comprises a grouping of application objects related to an application;

determining application objects unrelated to the application;

determining on which physical storage units the application objects reside;

determining a layout of the application objects based on the determined physical storage units where the application objects reside, wherein the layout increases manageability of the application; and

creating tasks to implement the determined layout of the application objects.

2. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a current size of the application objects.

3. The computer implemented method of claim 2, further comprising:

obtaining a growth rate for the application objects;

setting free space requirements and projections based on the growth rate for the application objects; and

determining a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set based on the free space requirements and projections.

4. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

mapping an infrastructure of the physical storage units.

5. The computer implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set.

6. The computer implemented method of claim 5, wherein the layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set is based on usage and performance requirements.

7. The computer implemented method of claim 5, wherein determining the layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set comprises:

including a volume size recommendation to accommodate the application set on a minimum number of volumes; and

setting volume sizes according to the volume size recommendation.

8. The computer implemented method of claim 1, wherein the tasks created to implement the layout of application objects comprise:

unloading the application objects currently residing the physical storage units;

re-defining infrastructure of the physical storage units based on the layout of the application objects;

creating new data description language tasks; and

loading the application objects in the defined infrastructure using the data description language tasks.

9. A data processing system comprising:

a bus system;

a communications system connected to the bus system;

a memory connected to the bus system, wherein the memory includes a set of instructions; and

a processing unit connected to the bus system, wherein the processing unit executes the set of instructions to identify an application set, wherein the application set comprises a grouping of application objects related to an application;

determine application objects unrelated to the application;

determine on which physical storage units the application objects reside;

determine a layout of the application objects based on the determined physical storage units where the application objects reside, wherein the layout increases manageability of the application; and

create tasks to implement the determined layout of the application objects.

10. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the processing unit further executes the set of instructions to determine a current size of the application objects.

11. The data processing system of claim 10, wherein the processing unit further executes the set of instructions to obtain a growth rate for the application objects;

set free space requirements and projections based on the growth rate for the application objects; and

determine a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set based on the free space requirements and projections.

12. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the processing unit further executes the set of instructions to map an infrastructure of the physical storage units.

13. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the processing unit further executes the set of instructions to determine a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set.

14. The data processing system of claim 9, wherein the processing unit executing the instructions to create tasks to implement the layout of application objects includes the processing unit further executing the set of instructions to unload current the application objects currently residing the physical storage units ;

re-define infrastructure of the physical storage units based on the layout of the application objects;

create new data description language tasks; and

load the application objects in the defined infrastructure using the data description language tasks.

15. A computer program product comprising:

a computer usable medium including computer usable program code for resolving intermixed application objects in storage, the computer program product including;

computer usable program code for identifying an application set, wherein the application set comprises a grouping of application objects related to an application;

computer usable program code for determining application objects unrelated to the application;

computer usable program code for determining on which physical storage units the application objects reside;

computer usable program code for determining a layout of the application objects based on the determined physical storage units where the application objects reside, wherein the layout increases manageability of the application; and

computer usable program code for creating tasks to implement the determined layout of the application objects.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, further including:

computer usable program code for determining a current size of the application objects.

17. The computer program product of claim 16, further including:

computer usable program code for obtaining a growth rate for the application objects;

computer usable program code for setting free space requirements and projections based on the growth rate for the application objects; and

computer usable program code for determining a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set based on the free space requirements and projections.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, further including:

computer usable program code for mapping an infrastructure of the physical storage units.

19. The computer program product of claim 15, further including:

computer usable program code for determining a layout of tablespaces, containers, and volumes for the application set.

20. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the computer usable program code for creating tasks to implement the optimum layout of objects includes:

computer usable program code for unloading the application objects currently residing the physical storage units;

computer usable program code for re-defining infrastructure of the physical storage units based on the layout of the application objects;

computer usable program code for creating new data description language tasks; and

computer usable program code for loading the application objects in the defined infrastructure using the data description language tasks.
