Abstract

An adjustably opaque film, including substantially flexible/transparent confining films and light transmission control layers, is provided. The inner surfaces of the first and second confining films form a confined space layer with substantially constant thickness. The adjustably opaque film is applied on a window panel which is already installed like a regular window pane on a building or an automobile. The film is not sandwiched between two window panels or panes. The film is adapted to be applied on a surface of window panels. The film is substantially flexible enough to be able to be easily handled and applied on the window panel in conventional construction site conditions. The interval between the first and second confining films is from about one (1) millimeter to about two (2) millimeters, which is an important point along with the flexibility.

Claims

1. An adjustably opaque film for applying over substantially smooth surface comprising:

a) a first substantially flexible and transparent confining film having an inner surface and an outer surface;

b) a second substantially flexible and transparent confining film having an inner surface and an outer surface, wherein the inner surfaces of the first and second confining films form a confined space layer; and

c) one or more light transmission control layer for controlling the intensity and frequency range of the transmitting light.

2. The adjustably opaque film of claim 1, wherein one of the first and second confining films is adapted to be attached to the substantially smooth surface.

3. The adjustably opaque film of claim 2, wherein the adjustably opaque film is adapted to be applied on a surface of the substantially smooth surfaces including car windows and building windows.

4. The adjustably opaque film of claim 1, wherein the adjustably opaque film is substantially flexible.

5. The adjustably opaque film of claim 1, wherein the interval between the first and second confining films varies substantially to fit a predetermined design requirements, wherein the interval is from about one (1) millimeter to about two (2) millimeters.

6. The adjustably opaque film of claim 1, wherein the light transmission control layer comprises a plurality of light transmission control cells, wherein the light transmission control cells are arranged to form a lattice.

7. The adjustably opaque film of claim 6, wherein the opacity of the light transmission control cells is variably adjustable, wherein the opacity of each of the light transmission control cells is adjusted by changing amplitude of electric field applied on the light transmission control cell.

8. The adjustably opaque film of claim 7, wherein each of the light transmission control cells comprises a first electrode, a second electrode, and an electro-optic material in between the first and second electrodes.

9. The adjustably opaque film of claim 8, wherein the electro-optic material comprises liquid crystal, or nonlinear optical material.

10. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises dichroic dye doped liquid crystals.

11. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises nematic liquid crystals with chiral dopants.

12. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises nematic liquid crystals without chiral dopants.

13. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises chiral nematic liquid crystals.

14. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises polymeric liquid crystals.

15. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal comprises ferroelectric liquid crystals.

16. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal is doped with dichroic light absorbing dye.

17. The adjustably opaque film of claim 9, wherein the liquid crystal is doped with pleochoric light absorbing dye.

18. The adjustably opaque film of claim 7, wherein the light transmission of the light transmission control cells is controllable manually.

19. The adjustably opaque film of claim 7, further comprising an array of photovoltaic cells, wherein the array provides electricity for operation of the light transmission control layer.

20. The adjustably opaque film of claim 19, wherein the adjustably opaque window is a vehicle window, and wherein the array is installed in a vehicle.

21. The adjustably opaque film of claim 1, further comprising:

a) two or more polarizing layers, wherein at least one polarizing layer is disposed each of the sides of the light transmission control layer; and

b) a plurality of shock absorbing layers interposed between any two of the confining films, light transmission control layers, and polarizing layers,

wherein the shock absorbing layers are adapted to support the layers mechanically and to hold the layers together, wherein the adjustably opaque film controls the light transmission by controlling the active optical property of the light transmission control layer.

22. The adjustably opaque film of claim 21, wherein the shock absorbing layer comprises a flexible sheet.

23. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the shock absorbing layer is made of flexible plastic.

24. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the thickness of the shock absorbing layer is in a range from about 0.1 to about 0.2 mm.

25. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the shock absorbing layer is attached to the light transmission layer, polarizing layer, and confining film by glass lamination processes.

26. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the shock absorbing layer is attached to the light transmission layer, polarizing layer, and confining film using pressure sensitive adhesive.

27. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein a first polarizing layer that is positioned between the first confining film and the light transmission control layer, and a second polarizing layer that is positioned between the first flexible sheet and the second confining film, wherein the direction of polarization of the first polarizing layer is substantially perpendicular to the direction of polarization of the second polarizing layer.

28. The adjustably opaque film of claim 27, wherein the first polarizing layer is integrated with the first confining film, and the second polarizing layer is integrated with the second confining film.

29. The adjustably opaque film of claim 27, wherein the first polarizing layer is absorptive.

30. The adjustably opaque film of claim 27, wherein the first polarizing layer is birefringence based.

31. The adjustably opaque film of claim 27, wherein the light transmission cell further comprises a first electrode that is substantially adjacent the first polarizing layer, and a second electrode that is substantially adjacent the second polarizing layer, wherein the liquid crystal is positioned between the first electrode and the second electrode.

32. The adjustably opaque film of claim 31, wherein the first electrode comprises a substantially transparent plastic substrate coated with transparent conductive coating, and wherein the second electrode comprises a substantially transparent plastic substrate coated with transparent conductive coating.

The adjustably opaque film of claim 31, wherein the surface of the first electrode, which is adjacent the liquid crystal, is treated with a first polymer layer such that the first polymer layer gives a preferential alignment to the adjacent liquid crystal, and the surface of the second electrode, which is adjacent the liquid crystal, is treated with a second polymer layer such that the second polymer layer gives a preferential alignment to the adjacent liquid crystal.

The adjustably opaque film of claim 33, wherein the liquid crystals adjacent the first and second polymer layers are pre-tilted from the planes of the first and second polymer layers, wherein the preferential direction of the treated first polymer layer is substantially parallel to the direction of polarization of the first polarizing layer, and the preferential direction of the treated second polymer layer is substantially parallel to the direction of the second polarizing layer.

35. The adjustably opaque film of claim 34, wherein the pre-tilting angle is in a range from 0°

to about forty five (45) degrees.

36. The adjustably opaque film of claim 35, wherein the pre-tilting angle is about thirty (30) degrees.

37. The adjustably opaque film of claim 31, wherein the light control transmission cell further comprises a plurality of spacers, wherein the spacers maintain predetermined distance between the first and second electrodes.

38. The adjustably opaque film of claim 37, wherein all of the spacers are coated with adhesive.

39. The adjustably opaque film of claim 37, wherein part of the spacers are coated with adhesive.

40. The adjustably opaque film of claim 37, wherein the spacers are randomly distributed within the light transmission control cell.

41. The adjustably opaque film of claim 37, wherein each of the spacers comprises a sphere, and the sphere contacts the first and second electrodes.

42. The adjustably opaque film of claim 41, wherein the sphere is coated with an adhesive layer, wherein the diameter of the sphere is in a range from about five (5) to about thirty (30) microns, and wherein the thickness of the adhesive layer is less than about five (5) microns.

43. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the first flexible sheet is coated with transparent electrically conductive coating.

44. The adjustably opaque film of claim 43, wherein the transparent conductive coating is made of Indium Tin Oxide.

45. The adjustably opaque film of claim 43, wherein the transparent conductive coating forms an electrical wiring to each light transmission control cell.

46. The adjustably opaque film of claim 45, further comprising a control circuit that controls each of the light transmission control cells individually with the electrical wiring.

47. The adjustably opaque film of claim 45, further comprising a control circuit that controls the light transmission control cells collectively in part with the electrical wiring.

48. The adjustably opaque film of claim 45, further comprising a control circuit that controls the light transmission control cells in whole with the electrical wiring.

49. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, further comprising a light sensor that measures the intensity of the incident light, wherein the control circuit controls the light transmission of the light transmission control cells based on data provided by the light sensor.

50. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the adjustably opaque window is an architectural window, a glass door, or a partition.

51. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, further comprising an ultra violet light blocking layer that is positioned between the first confining film and the light transmission control layer.

52. The adjustably opaque film of claim 22, wherein the shock absorbing layer further comprises a second flexible sheet, wherein the second flexible sheet is attached to the light transmission control layer opposite to the first flexible sheet.

53. The adjustably opaque film of claim 21, wherein the shock absorbing layer comprises gel that fill the cavity, and the light transmission control layer is supported in the gel.

54. The adjustably opaque film of claim 21, wherein attachment among the first confining film, the second confining film, the light transmission control layer, and the shock absorbing layer is done with pressure sensitive adhesive.

55. An adjustably opaque film comprising:

a) a light transmission control layer;

b) first and second electrodes, enveloping the light transmission control layer, comprising a transparent electrically conductive coating, a transparent plastic substrate, and a brushed polymer layer;

c) first and second inner shock absorbing layers enveloping light transmission control layer and the electrodes;

d) first and second polarizing layers enveloping the light transmission control layer, the electrodes, and the inner shock absorbing layers;

e) first and second outer shock absorbing layers, having inner and outer surfaces, enveloping the light transmission control layer, the electrodes, the inner shock absorbing layers, and the polarizing layers;

f) a first substantially flexible and transparent confining film disposed on the outer surface of the first outer shock absorbing layer; and

g) a second substantially flexible and transparent confining film disposed on the outer surface of the second outer shock absorbing layer.

56. The adjustably opaque film of claim 55, further comprising an ultraviolet light blocking layer and a shock absorbing layer that are positioned between the second confining film and the light transmission control layer.

57. The adjustably opaque film of claim 55, wherein the interval between the first and second confining films varies substantially to fit a predetermined design requirements, wherein the interval is from about one (1) millimeter to about two (2) millimeters.
