Abstract

A mobile terminal in a wireless communication network may be one of several modes of operation. When in an idle mode, the mobile terminal may avoid a lengthy random access procedure normally associated with responding to a page from a base station, if the base station includes in the page an indication of a resource that the mobile terminal may utilize when responding to the page. Additionally, the mobile terminal may transmit an efficient location update MAC header to a base station, whether prompted to by a page from the base station or not. Furthermore, without leaving the idle mode or a sleep mode, the mobile terminal may exchange short data burst messages with a base station.

Claims

1. At a base station in a wireless communication network, a method of initiating communication with a mobile terminal, said method comprising:

allocating a dedicated uplink resource for a predetermined period of time;

transmitting a page to a terminal, said page indicating said dedicated uplink resource;

determining that said predetermined period of time has not expired; and

receiving a response to said page from said terminal using said dedicated uplink resource.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising, responsive to receiving said response, de-allocating said dedicated uplink resource.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said transmitting and said receiving uses a time division duplex frame and said resource is a channel in said frame.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said transmitting and said receiving uses a code division multiple access protocol and said resource is a pseudorandom noise code.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein said transmitting and said receiving uses a orthogonal frequency division multiple access protocol and said resource is two-dimensional and includes a time and a sub-channel frequency.

25. A base station in a wireless communications system adapted to perform the method of claim 1.

6. At a mobile terminal in a wireless communication system, a method of initiating communication with a base station, said method comprising:

selecting a candidate pseudorandom noise code from a plurality of predefined pseudorandom noise codes;

transmitting said candidate pseudorandom noise code to said base station;

receiving an allocation message from said base station, where said allocation message indicates an allocated resource; and

transmitting a location update Media Access Control header to said base station, where said transmitting said location update Media Access Control header utilizes said allocated resource.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein said location update Media Access Control header includes a field for a reduced-length version of a Media Access Control address for said mobile terminal.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said allocation message is a Code Division Multiple Access allocation information element.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein said allocation message is an uplink map information element.

10. The method of claim 6, further comprising receiving a response to said location update Media Access Control header.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said response includes a renewed authentication key and said method further comprises transmitting an authentication request message to said base station.

26. A mobile terminal in a wireless communications system adapted to perform the method of claim 6.

12. At a mobile terminal in a mobile communication system, a method of initiating communication with a base station, said method comprising:

receiving a paging message from said base station;

responsive to said receiving said paging message, transmitting a location update indicator message to said base station;

receiving an allocation message from said base station, where said allocation message indicates an allocated resource; and

transmitting a location update Media Access Control header to said base station, where said transmitting said location update Media Access Control header utilizes said allocated resource.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said paging message includes a pseudorandom noise code and said transmitting said location update indicator message comprises transmitting said pseudorandom noise code.

14. The method of claim 12 further comprising receiving a response to said location update Media Access Control header.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein said response includes a renewed authentication key and said method further comprises transmitting an authentication request message to said base station.

16. At a mobile terminal in a wireless communication system, a method of initiating communication with a base station, said method comprising:

selecting a candidate pseudorandom noise code from a plurality of predefined pseudorandom noise codes;

transmitting said candidate pseudorandom noise code to said base station;

receiving an allocation message from said base station, where said allocation message indicates an allocated resource; and

transmitting a ranging request message to said base station, where said ranging request message includes a location update and said ranging request message utilizes said allocated resource.

17. At a mobile terminal in a mobile communication system, a method of initiating communication with a base station, said method comprising:

receiving a paging message from said base station;

responsive to said receiving said paging message, transmitting a location update indicator message to said base station;

receiving an allocation message from said base station, where said allocation message indicates an allocated resource; and

transmitting a ranging request message to said base station, where said ranging request message includes a location update and said ranging request message utilizes said allocated resource.

18. At a mobile terminal in sleep mode in a wireless communication network, a method of requesting uplink resources, said method comprising:

transmitting a request message including;

a byte request field for indicating a number of bytes requested; and

a connection ID field for indicating an identity of a connection.

19. The method of claim 18 wherein said request message further comprises:

a field for indicating that said message relates to requesting uplink resources;

a field for indicating whether encryption is used; and

a field for indicating a header check sequence.

20. At a mobile terminal in sleep mode in a wireless communication network, a method of indicating that payload in a corresponding protocol data unit is an uplink Short Data Burst, said method comprising:

transmitting a message, said message including;

a field for use in requesting a bandwidth poll; and

a field for indicating a slip of uplink grants relative to an uplink queue depth.

21. At a base station in a wireless communication network, a method of alerting a mobile terminal regarding future downlink short data burst transmissions, said method comprising:

transmitting a short data burst forecast information element, said information element including;

an indication of an identity of a connection; and

an indication of a frame during which said downlink short data burst is to be transmitted.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein said indication of said frame is provided as a frame offset relative to a current frame.

23. At a base station in a wireless communication network, a method of assigning downlink resources to a mobile terminal, said method comprising transmitting a downlink short data burst information element, said information element including an indication of whether an uplink resource is assigned in said information element for said mobile terminal to send an acknowledgment request message.

24. At a base station in a wireless communication network, a method of assigning uplink resources to a mobile terminal, said method comprising transmitting an uplink short data burst information element, said information element including an indication of whether said mobile terminal is to wait to receiving an acknowledgment for each data burst transmission.
