Abstract

A device for exsanguination from the hand and/or arm is described. In one embodiment, the device includes a gripping portion gripped by the hand of a patient holding the device. There is a cupped portion, and a roll of elastic wrapping material. The cupped portion has an inner space for receiving the roll and a slot for feeding out a length of wrap from the roll. The wrap material is fed out of the slot and wrapped around the hand of the patient so that the constrictive force pushes the blood out. A tourniquet is then applied and the wrap removed. In another embodiment, the device has a gripping portion with an end that is slotted to receive and anchor an end of a roll of wrapping material. With an end anchored, the material is unrolled and wrapped from the anchored end down around the hand gripping the device.

Claims

1. A device for exsanguination comprising:

a gripping portion constructed and arranged for gripping by the human hand;

a roll dispensing portion operatively coupled to said gripping portion, the dispensing portion defining an inner space and a slot; and

a roll formed from a strip of wrap material, the roll being received by the inner space of the dispensing portion, whereby a length of the wrap material strip can be drawn out from said roll through the slot of dispensing portion and wrapped around a hand gripping said gripping portion.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said dispensing portion includes an inner lip.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein said roll is formed of elastic wrapping material.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein said dispensing portion further defines an open end that leads to the inner space.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said gripping portion comprises a resilient material.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the resilient material is foam.

7. A device for use in exsanguination of a human hand and comprising:

a handle having an external surface sized to accommodate gripping by a human hand, and wherein said surface is cushioned for gripping engagement by fingers of a hand gripping said handle;

a roll of flexible strip material for wrapping the hand onto said handle while the hand is gripping said handle;

a receiver on said handle and storing said roll;

a stabilizer supported by said handle for stabilizing said roll while said strip material is unrolled from said roll; and

a guide on said handle for controlling said strip material as said strip material is unrolled from said roll.

8. The device of claim 7 and wherein:

said handle has an internal core which supports said external surface;

said receiver is supported by said core and has an axis; and

said stabilizer is an interior wall of said receiver and which is generally symmetrical about said axis;

said guide is a slot in said wall; and

said slot extends generally parallel to said axis and receives said unrolled strip material through said slot.

9. The device of claim 8 and wherein:

said wall is generally cylindrical about said axis.

10. The device of claim 8 and wherein:

said core of said handle has a longitudinal axis co-linear with said axis of said receiver.

11. The device of claim 7, and wherein:

said receiver has first and second ends;

said first end is proximate said handle exterior surface and said second end is remote from said exterior surface; and

said interior wall has a portion converging toward said receiver axis to limit axial movement of said roll in a direction toward said exterior surface of said handle.

12. The device of claim 11, and wherein:

said second end of said receiver is open to enable insertion of said roll into said receiver and removal of said roll from said receiver.

13. A device for exsanguination comprising:

a gripping member including a gripping portion and an attachment portion, wherein said gripping portion is constructed and arranged to be held by a human hand;

a wrapping material wherein said wrapping material is operatively coupled to said attachment portion and wrapped around said device and said hand.

14. The device of claim 13, said gripping member including a grip and a core.

15. The device of claim 13, wherein said wrapping material is a flexible elastic wrap.

16. The device of claim 13, wherein said attachment portion defines a slot.

17. The device of claim 13, wherein said attachment portion is serrated.

18. The device of claim 14, wherein said grip defines a frusto-conical shape.

19. The device of claim 14, wherein said grip is composed of a foam material.

20. The device of claim 13, wherein said attachment portion includes texturing constructions, wherein said texturing constructions enable coupling of said wrapping material to said attachment portion.

21. A method of exsanguination of an extremity comprising:

gripping with said extremity, a gripping portion of an exsanguination device;

while the extremity is gripping the gripping portion, drawing a wrapping material from storage through an exit defined in the exsanguination device; and

wrapping the wrapping material around a portion of the device and the extremity;

whereby the wrapping exsanguinates the extremity.

22. The method of claim 21 and wherein the extremity is a hand, the method further comprising:

supporting a quantity of the wrapping material on the exsanguinations device as the device is gripped by the hand being wrapped, and wherein;

said wrapping draws said wrapping material from said quantity through said exit; and

said wrapping is done around said hand and device whereby exsanguination of said hand occurs.

23. A device for exsanguinating blood comprising:

a gripping member including a core and a grip, said core including a first portion and a second portion, wherein said grip encloses said first portion of said core and is constructed and arranged to be held by a human hand, wherein said second portion of said core defines a slot; and

wrapping material, wherein said wrapping material is operatively coupled to said second portion at said slot and wrapped around said hand and said device.

24. The device of claim 23, wherein said wrapping material is a flexible elastic wrap.

25. The device of claim 23, wherein said second portion is serrated.

26. The device of claim 23, wherein said core is composed of plastic.

27. The device of claim 23, wherein said grip defines a frusto-conical shape.

28. The device of claim 23, wherein said grip is composed of foam.

29. A device for exsanguinating blood comprising:

a core including a first portion and a second portion, wherein said second portion defines a slot that passes through said core;

a grip formed around said first portion of said core, wherein said grip defines a frusto-conical shape constructed and arranged to conform to a human hand; and

a wrapping material, wherein said wrapping material is operatively coupled to said second portion and wrapped around said hand and said device.

30. The device of claim 29, wherein said wrapping material is a flexible elastic wrap.

31. The device of claim 29, wherein said second portion is serrated.

32. The device of claim 29, wherein said core is composed of plastic.

33. The device of claim 29, wherein said grip is composed of foam.

34. A method to assist in the exsanguination of blood comprising:

gripping a device with a hand;

attaching a wrapping material to said device;

wrapping said wrapping material around said device and said hand;

wherein said wrapping exsanguinates blood from said hand.
