Abstract

A bone fracture fixation system comprises a bone plate configured to bear against a proximal surface of the bone and a plurality of elongated tension elements, each sized to pass through an opening in the bone plate and through the bone from the proximal surface to a distal surface thereof. Each tension element is anchored to the bone and maintained in tension by a distal anchor attached to said tension element and configured to engage the distal surface of the bone and a proximal anchor engageable between the bone plate and the tension element.

Claims

1. A bone fracture fixation system comprising:

a bone plate configured to bear against a proximal surface of the bone, said bone plate defining a plurality of openings therethrough;

an elongated tension element sized to pass through one of said plurality of openings and through the bone from the proximal surface to a distal surface thereof;

a distal anchor attached to said tension element and configured to engage the distal surface of the bone when the tension element passes through the bone; and

a proximal anchor engageable between said bone plate and said tension element to maintain tension in said tension element between said proximal anchor and said distal anchor.

2. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said proximal anchor has a central opening sized to engage said tension element passing therethrough.

3. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein:

said bone plate defines a recess around at least some of said plurality of openings; and

said proximal anchor is sized to be received within said recess.

4. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said proximal anchor is a Tinnerman washer.

5. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said tension element is a metal cable.

6. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said distal anchor has a shape memory component with a first configuration sized to pass through one of said plurality of openings and through the bone from the proximal surface to a distal surface thereof, and a second shape memory configuration for engaging the distal surface of the bone.

7. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 6, wherein said distal anchor includes at least two prongs, said at least two prongs being substantially aligned with said elongated tension element in said first configuration and extended outward therefrom in said second shape memory configuration.

8. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 7, wherein said prongs are spring elements.

9. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 6, wherein said shape memory component is a strip configured to curl in said second shape memory configuration.

10. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 6, wherein said distal anchor is formed of a shape memory metal.

11. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said distal anchor is a disc.

12. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said distal anchor is a generally spherical element.

13. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 12, wherein said distal anchor includes a washer with a recess to receive said spherical element therein.

14. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, further comprising a sheath sized to contain said distal anchor and at least a portion of said tension element, said sheath adapted for insertion into the bone.

15. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 1, wherein said proximal anchor is configured for a polyaxial interface with said bone plate.

16. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 15, wherein said proximal anchor includes a shank extendable into the bone when said proximal anchor is engaged to said bone plate.

17. The bone fracture fixation system of claim 15, wherein:

at least some of said openings define a spherical wall and include a locking bushing disposed therein, said locking bushing having a spherical outer surface for complementary engagement with said spherical wall, said locking bushing further including an internally threaded bore; and

said proximal anchor includes a central bore for receiving said tension element therethrough and a threaded head, said head of said anchor and said locking bushing defining a tapered threaded interface so that said bushing expands into said spherical wall as said head is threaded into said bushing.

18. A method for fixation of a bone fracture comprising:

positioning a bone plate on a proximal surface of the bone, the bone plate including a plurality of openings therethrough;

passing at least two elongated tension elements through at least one of said plurality of openings and through the bone to a distal surface thereof;

anchoring the at least two tension elements at the distal surface;

tensioning the at least two tension elements; and

while maintaining the tension in the tension elements, anchoring the tension elements to the bone plate.

19. The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 18, further comprising fixing the bone plate to the bone with at least one bone screw through a corresponding one of the plurality of openings.

20. The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 18, further comprising the step of driving a K-wire through an opening and the bone prior to passing a tension element through the bone.

21. The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 18, wherein:

at least one of the tension elements includes a distal anchor attached to a distal end of the element; and

the step of passing the tension element through the bone includes positioning the distal anchor and at least a portion of the tension element within a sheath and passing the sheath through the bone plate opening and the bone until the distal anchor is at the distal surface of the bone.

22. A method for fixation of a bone fracture comprising:

positioning a bone plate on a proximal surface of the bone, the bone plate including a plurality of openings therethrough;

passing at least one elongated tension element through at least one of said plurality of openings and through the bone to a distal surface thereof;

anchoring the at least one tension element at the distal surface;

tensioning the at least one tension element; and

while maintaining the tension in the tension element, anchoring the tension element to the bone plate with a polyaxial interface with the bone plate.

The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 22, wherein the step of anchoring the tension element to the bone plate is accomplished with a polyaxial anchor member having a portion configured for polyaxial engagement with the plate and a shank, and further wherein the step includes driving the shank of the anchor member into the bone beneath the bone plate.

24. The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 22, further comprising fixing the bone plate to the bone with at least one bone screw through a corresponding one of the plurality of openings.

25. The method for fixation of a bone fracture of claim 22, wherein:

at least one of the tension elements includes a distal anchor attached to a distal end of the element; and

the step of passing the tension element through the bone includes positioning the distal anchor and at least a portion of the tension element within a sheath and passing the sheath through the bone plate opening and the bone until the distal anchor is at the distal surface of the bone.
