Abstract

A haptic feedback planar touch control used to provide input to a computer. A touch input device includes a planar touch surface that inputs a position signal to a processor of the computer based on a location of user contact on the touch surface. The computer can position a cursor in a displayed graphical environment based at least in part on the position signal, or perform a different function. At least one actuator is also coupled to the touch input device and outputs a force to provide a haptic sensation to the user contacting the touch surface. The touch input device can be a touchpad separate from the computer'"'"'s display screen, or can be a touch screen. Output haptic sensations on the touch input device can include pulses, vibrations, and spatial textures. The touch input device can include multiple different regions to control different computer functions.

Claims

1. A method for providing a user of a touch input device with interactive feedback, the method comprising:

detecting a user interaction with a first portion of the touch input device;

detecting a user interaction with a second portion of the touch input device; and

generating a haptic force in response to a change in interaction from the first portion to the second portion.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the change in interaction comprises movement of an interaction object from the first portion to the second portion.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the interaction object is a finger of the user.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the interaction object is a stylus.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second portions are visually demarcated.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second portions are haptically demarcated.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second portions are audibly demarcated.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second portions lie in parallel planes and the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially normal to the parallel planes.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second portions lie in parallel planes and the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially parallel to the parallel planes.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the touch input device is a touch pad.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the touch pad is provided with a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the touch input device is a touch screen.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the touch screen is configured to display a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

14. A method for providing a user of a touch input device with interactive feedback, the method comprising:

assigning a first function to a first portion of the touch input device such that interaction with the first portion initiates the first function;

assigning a second function to a second portion of the touch input device such that interaction with the second portion initiates the second function; and

generating a haptic force in response to a change in interaction from the first portion to the second portion.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the touch input device is coupled to a computer and at least one of the first or second functions is a computer function.

16. The method of claim 14, wherein the change in interaction comprises movement of an interaction object from the first portion to the second portion.

17. The method of claim 14, wherein the interaction object is a finger of the user.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the interaction object is a stylus.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the first and second portions are visually demarcated.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second portions are haptically demarcated.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second portions are audibly demarcated.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second portions lie in parallel planes and the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially normal to the parallel planes.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein the first and second portions lie in parallel planes and the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially parallel to the parallel planes.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein the touch input device is a touch pad.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the touch pad is provided with a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

26. The method of claim 14, wherein the touch input device is a touch screen.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the touch screen is configured to display a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

28. A method for providing interactive feedback to a user of a touch input device coupled to a display on which first and second graphical objects and a cursor are displayed, the cursor being movable in the display in accordance with interactions by the user with the touch input device, the method comprising:

generating a haptic force in response to motion of the cursor from the first to the second graphical object.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the touch input device is a touch pad.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein the touch input device is a touch screen.

31. The method of claim 28, wherein the touch input device has a substantially planar surface configured to receive user interaction, and wherein the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially normal to said planar surface.

32. The method of claim 28, wherein the touch input device has a substantially planar surface configured to receive user interaction, and wherein the haptic force is in a direction that is substantially parallel to said planar surface.

33. A touch input device comprising:

a first portion configured to initiate a first function in response to a user interaction with the first portion;

a second portion configured to initiate a second function in response to a user interaction with the second portion; and

an actuator configured to impart a haptic force to the touch input device in response to a change in interaction from the first portion to the second portion.

34. The touch input device of claim 33, wherein the touch input device has a substantially planar surface in which the first and second portions are disposed.

35. The touch input device of claim 33, wherein the haptic force is in a direction substantially orthogonal to the substantially planar surface.

36. The touch input device of claim 33, wherein the haptic force is in a direction substantially parallel to the substantially planar surface.

37. The touch input device of claim 33, wherein the touch input device is a touch screen.

38. The touch input device of claim 37, wherein the touch screen is configured to display a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

39. The touch input device of claim 33, wherein the touch input device is a touch pad.

40. The touch input device of claim 39, further comprising a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

41. A handheld device comprising:

a display; and

a touch input device including;

a first portion configured to initiate a first function of the handheld device in response to a user interaction with the first portion;

a second portion configured to initiate a second function of the handheld device in response to a user interaction with the second portion; and

an actuator configured to impart a haptic force to the touch input device in response to a change in interaction from the first portion to the second portion.

42. The handheld device of claim 41, wherein the touch input device has a substantially planar surface in which the first and second portions are disposed.

43. The handheld device of claim 41, wherein the haptic force is in a direction substantially orthogonal to the substantially planar surface.

44. The handheld device of claim 41, wherein the haptic force is in a direction substantially parallel to the substantially planar surface.

45. The handheld device of claim 41, wherein the touch input device is a touch screen.

46. The handheld device of claim 45, wherein the touch screen is configured to display a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.

47. The handheld device of claim 41, wherein the touch input device is a touch pad.

48. The handheld device of claim 47, further comprising a graphical representation of a button substantially corresponding to the first portion of the touch input device.
