1. A method for abnormal event detection (AED) absent beforehand specification of the abnormal event for some of process units of a hydrocracker unit of a petroleum refinery comprised of:
- (a) dividing said hydrocracker unit into equivalent groups with minimal interaction between groups (b) comparing online measurements from the process unit to a set of models including principal component analysis models included in the set for normal operation of the corresponding process units, wherein separate principal component analysis models correspond to an equipment group, (c) determining if the current operation differs from expected normal operations so as to indicate the presence of an abnormal condition in a process unit, and (d) determining the underlying cause of an abnormal condition in the HDC process unit.

Abstract
The present invention is a method for detecting an abnormal event for process units of a hydrocracking unit. The method compares the operation of the process units to a model developed by principle components analysis of normal operation for these units. If the difference between the operation of a process unit and the normal operation indicates an abnormal condition, then the cause of the abnormal condition is determined and corrected.

24. A system for abnormal event detection (AED) absent beforehand specification of the abnormal event for some of the process units of a hydrocracker unit of a petroleum refinery comprising:

(a) a set of models including principal component analysis models included in the set describing operations of the process units, wherein said hydrocracker unit has been divided into equipment groups having minimal interaction between groups, a principal component analysis model for each group, (b) a display which indicates if the current operation differs from expected normal operations so as to indicate the presence of an abnormal condition in the process unit, and (c) a display which indicates the underlying cause of an abnormal condition in the HDC process unit. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39)
