Abstract

A web based system for creating video compositions has a network connected interface generator for providing web pages to a user coupled to the network. A content library stores video clips and optionally images for use in creating the video composition or a sequence of video clips and/or images. A project database contains metadata for one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network, and a rendering engine provides down resolutioned previews of a user selected project for viewing by a user via the network.

Claims

1. A web based system for creating video compositions, the system comprising:

a network connected interface generator for providing web pages to a user coupled to the network;

a content library that stores video clips;

a project database that contains metadata for one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network; and

a rendering engine that provides down resolutioned previews of a user selected project for viewing by a user via the network.

2. The web based system of claim 1 wherein the system stores multiple versions of content at different resolutions.

3. The web based system of claim 2 wherein a first version of the content comprises a high resolution version.

4. The web based system of claim 2 wherein a second version of the content comprises a normalized version of content suitable for real time streaming over the network.

5. The web based system of claim 2 wherein a third version of the content comprises thumbnails of content at a normalized resolution that provides a visual cue corresponding to the content.

6. The web based system of claim 1 and further comprising an editor that provides a sequential view of selected content for a project to a user via the network.

7. The web based system of claim 6 wherein the sequential view of selected content comprises a fixed number of thumbnail images of each video clip in the project, and a single thumbnail for each image in the project.

8. The web based system of claim 6 wherein each selected content has a link to a page of editing functions applicable to the corresponding content.

9. The web based system of claim 8 wherein editing of content is stored as metadata with time stamps.

10. The web based system of claim 9 wherein the rendering engine applies the metadata to a down resolutioned version of the content to provide the preview.

11. The web based system of claim 6 and further comprising an interface for rearranging content in sequence.

12. The web based system of claim 6 and further comprising means for selecting music for a project.

13. The web based system of claim 1 wherein the network comprises the Internet.

14. A method of interacting with a user via a web browser for editing content stored on a network, the method comprising:

providing pages to the web browser to enable the user to;

access content stored in a network content library that stores video clips;

edit one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network; and

cause rendering and real time streaming of a down resolutioned preview of a user selected project for viewing by a user via the network.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein thumbnails are provided to the web browser to represent content.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein selected provided pages comprise a sequential view of selected content for a project.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the sequential view of selected content comprises a fixed number of thumbnail images of each video clip in the project, and a single thumbnail for each image in the project.

18. The method of claim 16 wherein the view of selected content has a link to a page of editing functions applicable to the corresponding content.

19. The method of claim 16 wherein the view of selected content further comprises an interface for rearranging content in sequence.

20. A web based system for creating montages, the system comprising:

means for providing web pages to a user coupled to the network;

means for storing content;

means for storing metadata for one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network; and

means for rendering down resolutioned previews of a user selected project for viewing by a user via the network.

21. The web based system of claim 20 and further comprising means for producing physical media with a high resolutioned version of a project.

22. The web based system of claim 20 wherein the means for storing content stores video clips at a first, high resolution format and a second lower resolution format suitable for streaming over the network.

23. The web based system of claim 22 wherein the means for storing content also stores thumbnail low resolution images representing the video clips.

24. The web based system of claim 23 wherein a fixed number of thumbnails are used to represent each video clip.

25. A web based system for creating montages, the system comprising:

a network connected interface generator for providing web pages to a user coupled to the network;

a content library that stores video clips and images, each in high and low resolution formats, wherein the low resolution format is suitable for streaming over the network;

a project database that contains metadata for one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network, the metadata containing time stamps corresponding to the content stored in the content library; and

a rendering engine that provides down resolutioned previews of a user selected project in the low resolution format for viewing by a user via the network.

26. A web based system for creating montages, the system comprising:

a network connected interface generator for providing web pages to a user coupled to the network;

a content library that stores content comprising video clips and images;

a project database that contains metadata for one or more projects that are being edited by a user via the network;

an editor that provides a time independent sequential view of content being edited as thumbnails of corresponding video and images and allows a user to change the sequence of content; and

a rendering engine that provides down resolutioned previews of a user selected project for viewing by a user via the network.
