Abstract

An active cable that communicates over much of its length using one or more optical fibers, but which includes at integrated electrical connector at least one of its ends. The cable may be an electrical to optical cable, and electrical to electrical cable, or one of many other potential configurations.

Claims

1. An integrated cable comprising:

a first optical fiber within the integrated cable;

a first opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to a first end of the first optical fiber such that when a first optical signal is present on the first optical fiber, the first opto-electrical transducer receives the first optical signal and converts the first optical signal into a first electrical signal; and

a first electrical connector integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the first opto-electrical transducer such that when the first optical signal is received by the first opto-electrical transducer, the first electrical connector receives the first electrical signal, wherein the first electrical connector is sized to connect with a first electrical port external to the cable such that when connected to the first electrical port and when the first electrical signal is present on the first electrical connector, the first electrical signal is provided to the first electrical port, wherein the first electrical connector further includes one or more connections for a low speed serial data interface.

2. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:

a protective coating configured to surround the first optical fiber, the first opto-electrical transducer and at least portions of the first electrical connector.

3. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:

a first electro-optical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the first electrical connector such that when a second electrical signal is applied to the first electrical connector, the first electro-optical transducer receives the second electrical signal and converts the second electrical signal into a second optical signal; and

a second optical fiber within the integrated cable and coupled to the first electro-optical transducer such that when the second electrical signal is present on the first electrical connector, the second optical fiber receives the second optical signal from the first electro-optical transducer at a first end of the second optical fiber.

4. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 3, further comprising:

a second opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to a second end of the second optical fiber such that when a third optical signal is present on the second optical fiber, the second opto-electrical transducer receives the third optical signal and converts the third optical signal into a third electrical signal;

a second electrical connector integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the second opto-electrical transducer such that when the third optical signal is received by the second opto-electrical transducer, the second electrical connector receives the third electrical signal, wherein the second electrical connector is sized to connect with a second electrical port external to the cable such that when connected to the second electrical port and when the third electrical signal is present on the second electrical connector, the third electrical signal is provided to the second electrical port; and

a second electro-optical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the second electrical connector such that when a fourth electrical signal is applied to the second electrical connector, the second electro-optical transducer receives the fourth electrical signal and converts the fourth electrical signal into a fourth optical signal,

wherein the first optical fiber is coupled to the second electro-optical transducer such that when the fourth electrical signal is present on the second electrical connector, the first optical fiber receives the fourth optical signal from the second electro-optical transducer at a second end of the first optical fiber.

5. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes a connection for a loss of signal (LOS) indication.

6. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes a connection for a fault indication.

7. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes a connection for a link disable control signal.

8. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes a connection to indicate the presence of the integrated cable to a host system that is associated with the first electrical port.

9. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 8, wherein the pin used to indicate the presence of the integrated cable to a host system is connected to one or more of the cable ground connections.

11. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the one or more connections for the low speed serial data interface are configured to be used for control of the first electro-optical transducer.

12. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the serial data interface is part of a system for the transmission of out of band data.

13. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the serial data interface is configured to be used to read or write data to nonvolatile memory.

14. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 13, wherein at least one of the serial data interface and the nonvolatile memory are used for one or more functions selected from the following list:

serial identifier codes, customer security codes, and diagnostic information.

15. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the serial data interface is implemented as an SPI connection.

16. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the serial data interface is implemented as an I2C connection.

17. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes a connection for an interrupt signal output.

18. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first electrical connector further includes one or more connections for reference clock input.

19. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:

at least one electrical conductor spanning the length of the integrated cable.

20. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 19, wherein the at least one electrical conductor is used to transmit low speed serial data from one end of the integrated cable to the other end of the integrated cable.

21. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the integrated cable supports data rates of between 1 to 11.5 gigabits per second, inclusive.

22. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein a length of the integrated cable is between 1 and 30 meters

23. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the integrated cable has a second electrical connector at a second end of the integrated cable to thereby form a first E-E cable, the electrical connection being sized to connect with a receptacle of a cable plug end adaptor.

24. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, wherein the integrated cable has a second electrical connector at a second end of the integrated cable to thereby form a first E-E cable, the first electrical connector being a male connector, and second electrical connector being a female connector configured to receive an electrical connector that is sized and shaped the same as the first electrical connector.

25. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, further comprising:

a second optical fiber within the integrated cable;

a second opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the first end of the second optical fiber such that when a second optical signal is present on the second optical fiber, the second opto-electrical transducer receives the first optical signal and converts the second optical signal into a second electrical signal; and

wherein the first electrical connector is integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the second opto-electrical transducer such that when the second optical signal is received by the second opto-electrical transducer, the second electrical connector receives the second electrical signal.

26. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 1, the integrated cable further comprising:

a third optical fiber within the integrated cable;

a third opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the first end of the third optical fiber such that when a third optical signal is present on the third optical fiber, the third opto-electrical transducer receives the third optical signal and converts the third optical signal into a third electrical signal, wherein the first electrical connector is integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the third opto-electrical transducer such that when the third optical signal is received by the third opto-electrical transducer, the first electrical connector receives the third electrical signal;

a fourth opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the second end of the fourth optical fiber such that when a fourth optical signal is present on the fourth optical fiber, the fourth opto-electrical transducer receives the fourth optical signal and converts the fourth optical signal into a fourth electrical signal;

a third electrical connector integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the fourth opto-electrical transducer such that when the fourth optical signal is received by the fourth opto-electrical transducer, the third electrical connector receives the fourth electrical signal, wherein the third electrical connector is sized to connect with a third electrical port external to the cable such that when connected to the third electrical port and when the fourth electrical signal is present on the third electrical connector, the fourth electrical signal is provided to the third electrical port; and

a fourth electro-optical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to the third electrical connector such that when a fourth electrical signal is applied to the third electrical connector, the fourth electro-optical transducer receives the fourth electrical signal and converts the fourth electrical signal into a fourth optical signal, wherein the fourth optical fiber is coupled to the fourth electro-optical transducer such that when the fourth electrical signal is present on the third electrical connector, the fourth optical fiber receives the fourth optical signal from the fourth electro-optical transducer at a second end of the fourth optical fiber.

27. An integrated cable comprising:

a first electro-optical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to a first electrical connector such that when a first electrical signal is applied to the first electrical connector, the first electro-optical transducer receives the first electrical signal and converts the first electrical signal into a first optical signal;

a first optical fiber within the integrated cable and coupled to the first electro-optical transducer such that when the first electrical signal is present on the first electrical connector, the first optical fiber receives the first optical signal from the first electro-optical transducer at a first end of the first optical fiber, and

nonvolatile memory disposed in the first electrical connector.

28. An integrated cable comprising in accordance with claim 27, wherein the first optical fiber is multi-mode optical fiber.

29. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 27, wherein the first electro-optical transducer includes a vertical surface emitting laser.

30. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 27, further comprising:

a mechanism for transmitting data over the first optical fiber using common mode signaling.

31. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 27, further comprising:

a mechanism for transmitting data over the first optical fiber using lower frequency out-of-band signals.

32. An integrated cable in accordance with claim 27, further comprising:

a microcontroller configured to interface with low speed signals.

33. An integrated cable comprising:

a first optical fiber within the integrated cable;

a first opto-electrical transducer within the integrated cable and coupled to a first end of the first optical fiber such that when a first optical signal is present on the first optical fiber, the first opto-electrical transducer receives the first optical signal and converts the first optical signal into a first electrical signal;

a first electrical connector integrated with the integrated cable and coupled to the first opto-electrical transducer such that when the first optical signal is received by the first opto-electrical transducer, the first electrical connector receives the first electrical signal, wherein the first electrical connector is sized to connect with a first electrical port external to the cable such that when connected to the first electrical port and when the first electrical signal is present on the first electrical connector, the first electrical signal is provided to the first electrical port; and

at least one electrical conductor spanning the length of the integrated cable, wherein the at least one electrical conductor is configured to transmit low speed serial data from one end of the integrated cable to the other end of the integrated cable.
