Abstract

Methods, systems, and articles of manufacture consistent with the present invention provide for managing a database. A data store is provided that is distributed over at least two sub data processing systems. A first information in the data store is associated with a first consistency level and a second information in the data store is associated with a second consistency level. At least one of the first consistency level and the second consistency level is selected according to an algorithm.

Claims

1. A method in a data processing system having a plurality of independent sub data processing systems, the data processing system having a program for managing a database, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a data store that is distributed over at least two of the plurality of sub data processing systems; and

associating a first information in the data store with a first synchronization strategy and a second information in the data store with a second synchronization strategy,

wherein at least one of the first synchronization strategy and the second synchronization strategy is selected according to an algorithm.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the algorithm is based on static information received.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the static information identifies a synchronization strategy for at least one of a field, a row, a table, and part of a table.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein at least one of the first synchronization strategy and the second synchronization strategy is selected automatically based on dynamic information.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is a database cache.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is an in-memory database.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is distributed by partitioning the data store over the at least two sub data processing systems.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is distributed by replicating the data store over at least two of the sub data processing systems.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the data store is distributed by partitioning the data store over the at least two sub data processing systems, and replicating at least one of the partitions over at least two of the sub data processing systems.

10. A computer-readable medium containing instructions that cause a program to perform a method for managing a database, the data processing system having a plurality of independent sub data processing systems, the method comprising the steps of:

providing a data store that is distributed over at least two of the plurality of sub data processing systems; and

associating a first information in the data store with a first synchronization strategy and a second information in the data store with a second synchronization strategy,

wherein at least one of the first synchronization strategy and the second synchronization strategy is selected according to an algorithm.

11. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the algorithm is based on static information.

12. The computer-readable medium of claim 11, wherein the static information identifies a synchronization strategy for at least one of a field, a row, a table, and part of a table.

13. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein at least one of the first synchronization strategy and the second synchronization strategy is selected automatically based on dynamic information.

14. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data store is a database cache.

15. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data store is an in-memory database.

16. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data store is distributed by partitioning the data store over the at least two sub data processing systems.

17. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data store is distributed by replicating the data store over at least two of the sub data processing systems.

18. The computer-readable medium of claim 10, wherein the data store is distributed by partitioning the data store over the at least two sub data processing systems, and replicating at least one of the partitions over at least two of the sub data processing systems.

19. A data processing system comprising:

a plurality of independent sub data processing systems, each sub data processing system having a memory and a processing unit,

wherein a first of the sub data processing systems has a program that provides a data store that is distributed over at least two of the plurality of sub data processing systems, and associates a first information in the data store with a first synchronization strategy and a second information in the data store with a second synchronization strategy, wherein at least one of the first synchronization strategy and the second synchronization strategy is selected according to an algorithm, the processing unit of the first sub data processing running the program.

20. The data processing systems of claim 19, wherein the algorithm uses one of static information and dynamic information.
