Abstract

A system to provide selective encryption controls for content is described. The system comprises a secure content service to verify entitlement of a content consumer to the encrypted content based on the entitlement associated with the content and a user profile associated with the content consumer.

Claims

1. A secure content service available through a network comprising:

a protection system to attach an entitlement to content and to encrypt the content, the encrypted content being freely available; and

an authorization logic to determine, based on a user profile and the entitlement attached to the content, whether an authenticated content consumer is entitled to the content.

2. The secure content service of claim 1, wherein the entitlement comprises one or more of the following:

a static group including an authorized individual user, a dynamic group including a predefined user group having at least one user, a virtual dynamic group wherein group membership is specified by one or more characteristics in the user profile.

3. The secure content service of claim 2, wherein the virtual dynamic group may specify one or more of the following:

membership in a particular organization, position in a particular organization, age, gender, sexual orientation, residence, and another characteristic specified in or derivable from the user profile.

4. The secure content service of claim 1, further comprising:

a key generator to generate the encryption key for the content.

5. The secure content service of claim 1, further comprising:

a key logic to obtain the decryption key in response to receiving a request from an authorized content consumer.

6. The secure content service of claim 2, further comprising:

an authorization logic to enable a content creator to define a membership of the dynamic group, the authorization logic further to enable the content creator to alter membership in the dynamic group at any time, thereby changing access rights to the content.

7. The secure content service of claim 6, wherein the dynamic group definition is stored in the content creator'"'"'s user Profile.

8. The secure content service of claim 1, further comprising:

the protection system to encrypt content prior to making it available, the content being freely available in the encrypted form to the public; and

a message substitution logic to insert an encryption-appropriate message for display when a non-authorized user attempts to view an encrypted entry.

9. The secure content service of claim 1, further comprising:

a timing logic to enable the setting of an entitlement period for a specific duration.

10. The secure content service of claim 1, further comprising:

a monitoring and logging logic to log each access to the secure content service, and to monitor the log, to provide security for the user

11. The secure content service of claim 10, wherein the monitoring and logging logic is for identifying anomalous access requests, wherein an access request is logged for each encryption and decryption request, the service further comprising:

an alert logic to notify the user of the anomalous request.

12. The secure content service of claim 10, wherein the monitoring and logging logic may be used to provide proof-of-reading receipts for encrypted content.

13. The secure content service of claim 10, wherein the monitoring and logging logic is further for identifying access requests to the user profile that require real-time authorization from the user, and further:

an alert logic to request real-time authorization from the user, and provide access to the user profile only when authorization is received.

A system to provide selective encryption controls for content, the system comprising a secure content service to encrypt and decrypt selected portions of the content, and to verify that the content consumer is entitled to the encrypted portions of the content, the secure content service comprising:

an authorization logic to receive a request from a content consumer to access encrypted content, the request including a unique content identifier and an associated entitlement;

the authorization logic to compare the entitlement with a user profile of the content consumer, and determine whether the content consumer is entitled to access the content; and

a key logic to obtain a decryption key associated with the content element, if the content consumer is entitled to access the content.

15. A secure content service available through a network comprising:

a user profile including a plurality of attributes;

a protection system to encrypt content using a key, and to attach an entitlement to a content, the entitlement defining access rights to the content, the entitlement comprising one or more of the following;

a static group including an authorized individual user, a dynamic group including a predefined user group having at least one user, a virtual dynamic group wherein group membership is specified by one or more claims derivable from the user profile.
