Abstract

Devices and methods provide accurate targeting, placement, and/or stabilization of an electrode or other instrument(s) into the brain or other body organ, such as to treat severe tremor or other neurological disorders. Targeting is performed using any form of image-guidance, including real-time MRI, CT, or frameless surgical navigation systems.

Claims

1. A device for immobilizing a primary instrument, comprising:

a base;

attachable to the base, a detachable stabilizer configured to engage the instrument, the stabilizer being configured to rest on the base and defining a variable opening sized and shaped to grip the instrument when in an original shape yet release the instrument when expanded circumferentially away from the instrument in a deformed shape; and

selectively attachable to the opening of the stabilizer, a separate spreader that includes a pair of surfaces angularly spaced from each other by an amount greater than the amount of the opening of the stabilizer when in the original shape.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the stabilizer is generally C-shaped.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the variable opening is a wedge-shaped angular opening.

4. The device of claim 3, wherein the surfaces of the spreader are configured to be inserted within the variable opening of the stabilizer to expand the variable opening.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the base is generally ring-shaped.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is configured to be used in combination with an adjustable trajectory access device configured to guide the instrument along a trajectory through an entry portal.

7. The device of claim 6, wherein the device is configured to be attached to the access device.

8. A method, comprising:

securing an immobilizing device around an entry portal in a surface;

expanding a variable opening in the immobilizing device to a deformed shape;

passing an instrument at least partially through the variable opening in the immobilizing device; and

allowing the variable opening to relax to an original shape around the instrument to grip the instrument.

9. The method of claim 8, comprising attaching a detachable stabilizer to the immobilizing device, the detachable stabilizer including the variable opening.

10. The method of claim 8, wherein expanding the variable opening includes attaching a separate spreader to the immobilizing device to spread the variable opening by an amount greater than the amount when in the original shape.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein allowing the variable opening to relax includes removing a separate spreader from the variable opening of the immobilizing device.

12. The method of claim 8, comprising attaching the immobilizing device to an adjustable trajectory access device.

13. The method of claim 12, comprising guiding the instrument along a trajectory through the entry portal in the surface with the adjustable trajectory access device.

14. A device for immobilizing a primary instrument, comprising:

means for securing the device around an entry portal in a surface; and

means for expanding a variable opening in the device to a deformed shape to accept at least a portion of an instrument, wherein the variable opening, when in an original shape, is sized and shaped to grip the instrument.

15. The device of claim 14, comprising means for attaching the device to an adjustable trajectory access device.

16. The device of claim 14, comprising means for guiding the instrument along a trajectory through the entry portal in the surface.
