Abstract

A collection of software scripts, programs and web pages that capture, organize, and store wireless and digital device data and images of customer/lot vehicles for use in vehicle dealerships, service, and repair locations. Reports and views of the collected, organized data in real-time are provide.

Claims

1. A system for determining a vehicle status comprising:

a computer configured to receive vehicle data associated with a vehicle;

a motion detector configured to detect motion near said vehicle, determine vehicle motion of said vehicle from said motion, and detect when said vehicle has reached a pre-selected motion; and

at least one camera configured to capture images of said vehicle when said vehicle has reached said pre-selected motion, and transmit said images to a public server through an electronic connection;

wherein said public server is configured to receive said images, combine said images with said vehicle data, store said combination, and determine said vehicle status based on said combination.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said computer, said public server, and said at least one camera are electronically connected through a communications network.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein said communications network is a wireless network.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein said at least one camera is configured to be stationary and focused on said vehicle, is electronically coupled with said public server, said public server configured to capture said images by means of the stationary cameras;

and

wherein said at least one camera and said public server are configured with clocks that can be synchronized with each other.

5. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a timer configured to;

become active when said vehicle reaches said pre-selected motion;

trigger the capture of said images from said at least one camera while said timer is active; and

become inactive when said vehicle motion differs from said pre-selected motion.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein said public server is further configured to:

direct lights at said vehicle;

configure said lights to enhance resolution of said images; and

configure said lights to activate and deactivate said timer.

7. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a handheld device configured with said at least one camera, the camera-configured handheld device being electronically coupled with said public server, the camera-configured handheld device capturing said images.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein said handheld device is further configured with a barcode scanner.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising:

a camera poller configured to periodically capture said images.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein the communications network is a wireless network.

10. A method for determining a vehicle status comprising the steps of:

receiving vehicle data associated with a vehicle into a computer;

detecting motion near the vehicle;

determining vehicle motion of the vehicle from the motion;

detecting when the vehicle has reached a pre-selected motion;

capturing images of the vehicle by at least one camera when the vehicle has reached the pre-selected motion;

transmitting the images to a public server through an electronic connection;

combining the images with the vehicle data;

storing the combination at the public server; and

determining the vehicle status based on the combination.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of:

electronically connecting the computer, the public server, and the at least one camera through a communications network.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of capturing the images comprises the steps of:

focusing the at least one camera on the vehicle;

electronically coupling the at least one camera with the public server;

synchronizing clocks associated with the at least one camera and the public server;

capturing the images by means of the at least one camera; and

transferring the images from the at least one camera to the public server through a communications network.

14. The method of claim 10 further comprising the steps of:

activating a timer when the vehicle reaches the pre-selected motion;

capturing the images from the at least one camera while the timer is active; and

deactivating the timer when the vehicle motion differs from the pre-selected motion.

15. The method of claim 14 further comprising the steps of:

directing lights at the vehicle;

configuring the lights to enhance the images; and

configuring the lights to activate and deactivate the timer.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of capturing images comprises the steps of:

configuring a handheld device with the at least one camera;

electronically coupling the handheld device with the public server; and

capturing the images by means of the handheld device.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of capturing images comprises the steps of:

determining from the images an area of the vehicle that has been damaged;

capturing additional images of the area; and

highlighting the area on a user display associated with the computer.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of capturing images comprises the step of:

periodically polling the at least one camera to capture the images.

19. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of storing the combination at the public server comprises the steps of:

storing the combination in a database;

dividing the database into subsets of data including vendor-related data and service provider-related data;

establishing vendor privileges for a vendor with respect to the vendor-related data;

establishing service provider privileges for a service provider with respect to the service provider-related data;

providing selective access to the database to the vendor based on the vendor privileges; and

providing selective access to the database to a service provider based on the service provider privileges.

20. The method of claim 10 further comprising the steps of:

probing the vehicle with a diagnostic tool;

receiving codes from the diagnostic tool,

interpreting the codes to prepare a vehicle repair list; and

transmitting the vehicle repair list to a service provider.

21. The method of claim 10 further comprising the step of:

transmitting the vehicle data and the images to the public server by e-mail through the communications network.

22. A computer node in a communications network configured to carry out the method according to claim 10.

23. A communications network comprising at least one node for carrying out the method according to claim 10.

24. The method of claim 10 wherein said step of determining the vehicle status based on the stored combination is performed by receiving a carrier wave from a communications network, the carrier wave carrying information for executing said step of determining the vehicle status based on the combination.

25. A computer readable medium having instructions embodied therein for the practice of the method of claim 10.
