Abstract

A method is provided. The method stores a first version of an artifact in a first environment. Further, the method stores a second version of the artifact in the first environment. In addition, the second version of the artifact is distinct from the first version of the artifact. The method also deploys the first version of the artifact and the second version of the artifact to a second environment so that the first artifact and the second artifact can be run simultaneously in the second environment. The second environment is distinct from the first environment.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

storing a first version of an artifact in a first environment;

storing a second version of the artifact in the first environment, the second version of the artifact distinct from the first version of the artifact; and

deploying the first version of the artifact and the second version of the artifact to a second environment so that the first artifact and the second artifact can be run simultaneously in the second environment, the second environment being distinct from the first environment.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the second version of the artifact includes additional data not seen in the first version of the artifact.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising establishing a rule that any additional material is added to the second version of the artifact.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is a business service.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is a business object.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is a business rule.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is a business event.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is a business process.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the artifact is an application.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein a first user can utilize the first version of the artifact at the same time that a second user can utilize the second version of the artifact.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the second version of the artifact has a second version interface that is compatible with a first version interface of the first version of the artifact.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing a first set of metadata contents for the first version and a second set of metadata for the second version in a repository, the repository being accessible to the second environment.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the deploying is effectuated such that there is no downtime to a first user of the first version or a second user of the second version.

14. A machine readable medium having stored thereon a set of instructions which when executed perform a method comprising:

providing a first version of an artifact in an environment;

providing a second version of the artifact in the environment simultaneously with the first version of the artifact; and

establishing compatibility between a first interface of the first version of the artifact and a second interface of the second version of the artifact.

15. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the method further comprises providing simultaneous access to a first user of the first version and a second user of the second version.

16. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the second version of the artifact includes additional data not seen in the first version of the artifact.

17. The machine readable medium of claim 14, further comprising providing the first version of the artifact and the second version of the artifact with access to the same set of resources.

18. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the method further comprises installing the second version of the artifact without interrupting operation of the first version of the artifact.

19. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the artifact is an application.

20. The machine readable medium of claim 14, wherein the method further comprises assigning the second version of the artifact to a first user that previously utilized the first version of the artifact.

21. A system comprising:

a unit that provides a first version of a service in an environment;

a unit that installs a second version of the service in the environment without affecting the operation of the first version of the service; and

a unit that establishes compatibility between a first interface of the first version of the service and a second interface of the second version of the service.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the second version of the service includes additional data not seen in the first version of the service.
