  • a first longitudinally extending tube, a second longitudinally extending tube in sliding telescope engagement with the first tube, a locking mechanism having an unlocked condition permitting relative sliding movement of the first tube relative to the second tube and a locked condition preventing relative sliding movement of the first tube relative to the second tube when the first tube and the second tube are in a desired longitudinal relationship, each tube having an end remote from the other tube, each end carrying a surface engaging member, and at least one of the surface engaging members having a cruciform shape comprising four, equally-angularly spaced claws, each claw having an end portion extending towards one of said surfaces when in use, each end portion having a pair of laterally spaced penetrating points with a transverse edge extending therebetween, whereby the penetrating points penetrate one of said surfaces when the post is installed therebetween and the laterally extending edges engage the surface to limit penetration of the points thereinto.
