Abstract

Embodiments of a method and system for utilizing user-designed applications are disclosed. A user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system may be received. The user-designed application may be deployed server-side within the system. A user request may be processed server-side for the user-designed application in the system.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a user-designed interface that utilizes at least one high-level application program interface (API);

deploying the user-designed interface server-side within a system; and

processing a user request server-side through the user-designed interface with a server in the system.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

tracking utilization of a resource of the system used by the user-designed interface.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising providing compensation based on at least one of:

the utilization of the resource by the user-designed interface, or

a number of transactions processed through use of the user-designed interface.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the compensation is provided by at least one of:

an operator of the system,

a lister of an item available in the system through the user-designed interface, or

a purchaser of the item processed through use of the user-designed interface.

5. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

providing a report of the utilization of the resource.

6. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

charging for the utilization of the resource of the system beyond a system threshold.

7. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

denying access to the system through the user-designed interface when the utilization of the resource of the system exceeds a system threshold.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the resource include at least one of:

a number of cycles of a central processing unit (CPU),

a memory, or

a number of system calls.

9. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing content through the user-designed interface in response to processing the user request.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the user-designed interface includes user-provided content.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the user request includes at least one of:

a selection of an item for purchase, or

a selection of an item for bid.

12. A method comprising:

receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level application program interface (API) available within a system;

deploying the user-designed application server-side within the system; and

processing a user request server-side for the user-designed application in the system.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system comprises:

posting a request for a feature that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system; and

receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature comprises:

receiving a notification of intent to create a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature; and

receiving a user-designed application from the provider of the notification that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature further comprises:

determining whether the user-designed application satisfies an acceptance criterion; and

compensating a developer of the user-designed application when the application satisfies the acceptance criterion.

16. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system comprises:

posting a request for a feature that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system;

receiving a plurality of designed applications from a plurality of users that utilize at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature; and

selecting a user-designed application from among the plurality of designed applications for deployment.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein selecting a user-designed application from the plurality of designed application for deployment further comprises:

compensating a developer of the user-designed application.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API:

receiving a selection of a plurality of low-level application program interfaces (APIs) that communicate with a server in a system;

deploying the plurality of low-level APIs as at least one high-level API in the system; and

receiving a user-designed application that utilizes the at least one high-level API.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes the at least one high-level API comprises:

receiving a user-designed application that utilizes the at least one high-level API; and

testing the at least one high-level API and the user-designed application server-side in the system.

20. The method of claim 12, wherein the system includes a grid management framework, the method further comprising:

managing a resource associated with the user-designed application in the grid management framework.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the grid management framework is an enterprise grid alliance (EGA) framework.

22. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving a user-designed application that utilizes the at least one high-level API:

receiving programmable code for a service;

compiling the programmable code; and

receiving a user-designed application that utilizes the at least one high-level API and the compiled code.

23. The method of claim 12, wherein the system includes a distributed system, the distributed system capable of load-balancing.

24. The method of claim 12, wherein the user-designed application is a user-designed interface.

25. A method comprising:

receiving an access request for a system;

selecting a user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system; and

processing a user request server-side through the user-designed interface with a server in the system.

26. The method of claim 25, further comprising:

providing content through the user-designed interface in response to processing the user request.

27. The method of claim 25, further comprising:

denying access through the user-designed interface when utilization of a resource of the system exceeds a system threshold.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein selecting a user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system comprises:

dynamically selecting a user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system.

29. The method of claim 25, wherein selecting a user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system comprises:

identifying a plurality of available user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system; and

receiving a selection of a user-designed interface from the plurality of available user-designed interface.

30. A method comprising:

selecting a plurality of low-level application program interfaces (APIs) that communicate with a server in a system, the plurality of low-level APIs to be embodied as at least one high-level API;

creating a user-designed interface capable of utilizing the at least one high-level API when deployed in the system; and

providing the selection of the plurality of low-level APIs and the user-designed interface to an operator of the system.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

receiving a report of utilization of a resource of the system by the user-designed interface.

32. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

receiving compensation from the operator of the system.

33. A system comprising:

a receiver module to receive a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system;

a deployment module to deploy the user-designed application server-side within the system; and

a request processing module to process a user request server-side for the user-designed application in the system.

34. The system of claim 33, further comprising:

a selection module to select a user-designed interface deployed server-side within the system.

35. The system of claim 33, further comprising:

a resource management module to manage resources associated with the user-designed application.

36. A machine-readable medium comprising instructions, which when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

receive a user-designed interface that utilizes at least one high-level application program interface (API);

deploy the user-designed interface server-side within a system; and

process a user request server-side through the user-designed interface with a server in the system.

37. The machine-readable medium of claim 36 further comprising instructions, which when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

track utilization of a resource of the system used by the user-designed interface.

38. A machine-readable medium comprising instructions, which when executed by a machine, cause the machine to:

receive a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level application program interface (API) available within a system;

deploy the user-designed application server-side within the system; and

process a user request server-side for the user-designed application in the system.

39. The machine-readable medium of claim 38, wherein causing the machine to receive a user-designed application that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system causes the machine to:

post a request for a feature that utilizes at least one high-level API available within a system;

receive a plurality of designed applications from a plurality of users that utilize at least one high-level API available within a system and implements the feature; and

select a user-designed application from among the plurality of designed applications for deployment.
