Abstract

A method and apparatus to recognize a button gesture on a sensing device. The method may include detecting a presence of a conductive object on a sensing device, having a plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements, which form an outer and an inner sensing area, and recognizing a button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

detecting a presence of a conductive object on a sensing device, wherein the sensing device comprises a plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements, forming an outer sensing area and an inner sensing area, wherein the inner sensing area comprises extension areas of two or more sensor elements of the plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements of the outer sensing area; and

recognizing a button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a capacitance of the conductive object on the sensing device over time, wherein determining the capacitance further comprises determining a capacitance of each of the plurality of sensor elements of the sensing device, and wherein recognizing the button operation is based on the capacitance of each of the plurality of sensor elements.

The method of claim 2, wherein determining the capacitance comprises determining a capacitance of each of the plurality of sensor elements of the sensing device, and wherein recognizing the button operation further comprises detecting the presence of the conductive object on the extension areas of the two or more sensor elements of the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein recognizing the button operation comprises:

scanning the plurality of sensor elements of the sensing device; and

recognizing the button operation when two or more non-adjacent sensor elements detect the presence of the conductive object.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements of the outer sensor area are disposed to form a substantially toroidal-shaped sensing area.

6. An apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of sensor elements of a sensing device, wherein the plurality of sensor elements are non-linearly disposed on the sensing device, and wherein the plurality of sensor elements form an outer sensing area; and

an inner sensing area comprising extension areas of two or more sensor elements of the plurality of sensor elements of the outer sensing area, wherein the inner sensing area is located within the outer sensing area of the plurality of sensor elements.

The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the plurality of sensor elements from a substantially toroidal-shaped sensing area, wherein the two or more sensor elements are non-adjacent sensor elements in the outer sensing area, and wherein the extension areas of the two or more sensor elements form two adjacent semi-circular shapes in the inner sensing area.

8. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the plurality of sensor elements from a substantially toroidal-shaped sensing area, wherein the two sensor elements are non-adjacent sensor elements in the outer sensing area, and wherein the extension areas of the two or more sensor elements form a helix shape in the inner sensing area.

9. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the outer sensing area and the center sensing are configured to detect a presence of a conductive object on the sensing device.

10. The apparatus of claim 6, further comprising a processing device coupled to the plurality of sensor elements of the sensing device, wherein the processing device is operable to recognize the button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected within the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the processing device comprises one or more capacitance sensors coupled to the plurality of sensor elements, and wherein the one or more capacitance sensors are configured to measure a capacitance on the plurality sensor elements.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein each of the one or more capacitance sensors comprises a relaxation oscillator coupled to the plurality of sensor elements, wherein the relaxation oscillator comprises:

a current source to provide a charge current to the plurality of sensor elements;

a selection circuit coupled to the plurality of sensor elements and the current source, wherein the selection circuit is configured to sequentially select a sensor element of the plurality of sensor elements to provide the charge current and to measure the capacitance of each sensor element of the sensing device;

a comparator coupled to the current source and the selection circuit, wherein the comparator is configured to compare a voltage on the selected sensor element and a threshold voltage;

a reset switch coupled to the comparator, current source, and selection circuit, wherein the reset switch is configured to reset the charge current on the selected sensor element; and

a digital counter coupled to the relaxation oscillator, and wherein the digital counter is configured to count at least one of a frequency or a period of a relaxation oscillator output received from the relaxation oscillator.

The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising a component external to the processing device, wherein the processing device is configured to send data to the component when the button operation is recognized, and wherein the component external to the processing device is at least one of a processor, a driver of a processor, or an embedded controller.

14. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the conductive object is at least one of a finger, or a stylus.

15. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the sensing device is mounted on a multimedia device.

16. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the sensing device is at least one of a touch-sensor pad, or a touch-sensor slider.

17. An apparatus, comprising:

a plurality of sensor elements of a sensing device, wherein the plurality of sensor elements are non-linearly disposed on the sensing device; and

an inner sensing area comprising extension areas of two or more sensor elements of the plurality of sensor elements of the outer sensing area, wherein the inner sensing area is located within the outer sensing area of the plurality of sensor elements; and

means for recognizing a button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for recognizing motion operations on the sensing device.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for increasing sensitivity of the sensing device to recognize the button operation of the sensing device.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, further comprising means for providing button operation functionality and slider functionality without increasing a pin count of the sensing device.

21. A method, comprising:

providing a sensing device having an outer sensing area and an inner sensing area, wherein the sensing device comprises a plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements disposed in the outer sensing area and an additional sensor element disposed in the inner sensing area; and

detecting a presence of a conductive object, manipulated by a user, on the sensing device.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising determining a button operation when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

23. The method of claim 21, further comprising determining a slider operation when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the outer sensing area of the sensing device.

24. The method of claim 21, wherein the sensing device is a circular slider having a center button, wherein the additional sensor element corresponds to the center button in the inner sensing area of the sensing device, and the plurality of sensor elements correspond to the outer sensing area of the circular slider.

25. An apparatus, comprising a sensing device having an outer sensing area and an inner sensing area, wherein the sensing device comprises a plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements disposed in the outer sensing area and an additional sensor element disposed in the inner sensing area, and wherein the inner sensing area is located within the outer sensing area of the plurality of sensor elements.

26. The apparatus of claim 25, wherein two or more sensor elements of the plurality of sensor elements of the outer sensing area each comprise an extension area that extends from the outer sensing area to the inner sensing area of the sensing device.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the plurality of sensor elements from a substantially toroidal-shaped sensing area, wherein the two or more sensor elements are non-adjacent sensor elements in the outer sensing area, and wherein the extension areas of the two or more sensor elements form two adjacent semi-circular shapes in the inner sensing area.

28. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the plurality of sensor elements from a substantially toroidal-shaped sensing area, wherein the two sensor elements are non-adjacent sensor elements in the outer sensing area, and wherein the extension areas of the two or more sensor elements form a helix shape in the inner sensing area.

29. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein the outer sensing area and the inner sensing area are configured to detect a presence of a conductive object on the sensing device.

30. The apparatus of claim 26, further comprising a processing device coupled to the plurality of sensor elements of the sensing device, wherein the processing device is configured to recognize a button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected within the inner sensing area of the sensing device and to recognize a slider operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected within the outer sensing area of the sensing device.

31. An apparatus, comprising:

a sensing device having an outer sensing area and an inner sensing area, wherein the sensing device comprises a plurality of non-linearly disposed sensor elements disposed in the outer sensing area; and

means for detecting a presence of a conductive object, manipulated by a user on the sensing device.

32. The apparatus of claim 31, further comprising means for recognizing a button operation on the sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is detected on the inner sensing area of the sensing device.
