Abstract

The present invention provides a method involving at least one mobile node and a heterogeneous network comprising a plurality of access nodes. One embodiment of the method includes providing at least one first message including information indicative of a selected access node. The access node is selected to provide command services to the at least one mobile node.

Claims

1. A method involving at least one mobile node and a heterogeneous network comprising a plurality of access nodes, comprising:

providing at least one first message including information indicative of a selected access node, the access node being selected to provide at least one of command and control services to said at least one mobile node.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein providing said at least one first message comprises providing at least one first message including a request to report at least one event associated with the heterogeneous network

3. The method of claim 2, wherein providing said at least one first message including a request to report at least one event associated with the heterogeneous network comprises providing at least one first message including information indicative of at least one threshold for reporting said at least one event associated with the heterogeneous network.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein providing said at least one first message comprises providing said at least one first message to a media independent handoff function or layer.

5. The method of claim 1, comprising selecting one of the plurality of access nodes.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein selecting one of the plurality of access nodes comprises selecting one of the plurality of access nodes based on at least one policy associated with said at least one mobile node.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein providing said at least one first message comprises providing at least one first message including information indicative of said at least one policy.

8. The method of claim 1, comprising receiving at least one second message in response to providing said at least one first message, said at least one second message indicating registration confirmation of said at least one mobile node.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving said at least one second message comprises receiving at least one second message including a request to report at least one event associated with said at least one mobile node.

10. The method of claim 9, comprising providing at least one third message in response to receiving said at least one second message including information indicative of at least one event associated with said at least one mobile node.

11. A method involving at least one mobile node and a heterogeneous network comprising a plurality of access nodes, comprising:

receiving at least one first message including information indicative of a selected access node, the access node being selected to provide at least one of command and control services to said at least one mobile node.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein receiving said at least one first message comprises receiving said at least one first message at a media independent handoff function or layer.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein receiving said at least one first message including information indicative of the selected access node comprises receiving at least one first message including information indicative of an access node selected based on at least one policy associated with said at least one mobile node.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein receiving said at least one first message comprises receiving at least one first message including information indicative of said at least one policy.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein receiving said at least one first message comprises receiving at least one first message including a request to report at least one event associated with the heterogeneous network.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein receiving said at least one first message comprises receiving at least one message including information indicative of at least one threshold for reporting said at least one event associated with the heterogeneous network.

17. The method of claim 11, comprising providing at least one second message in response to receiving said at least one first message, said at least one second message indicating registration confirmation of said at least one mobile node.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein providing said at least one second message comprises providing at least one second message including a request to report at least one event associated with said at least one mobile node.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein providing said at least one second message comprises providing at least one second message including information indicative of at least one threshold for reporting said at least one event associated with said at least one mobile node.

20. The method of claim 18, comprising receiving at least one third message in response to providing said at least one second message including information indicative of at least one event associated with said at least one mobile node.
