Abstract

Devices for monitoring structural health conditions of host structures. A device includes at least one optical fiber sensor and an electronic module. The optical fiber sensor includes a rolled optical fiber cable operative to generate a frequency shift of a light signal passing therethrough and a coating layer applied to the rolled optical cable. The frequency shift is commensurate with vibration of the host structure. The electronic module sends an input light signal to the optical fiber sensor, receives a sensor signal from the optical fiber sensor, and processes the sensor signal.

Claims

1. A diagnostic system for monitoring structural health conditions of an object, comprising:

at least one optical fiber sensor including;

a rolled optical fiber cable operative to generate a frequency shift of a light signal passing therethrough, the frequency shift being commensurate with vibration of the object; and

a coating layer applied to the rolled optical cable; and

an electronic module operative to send an input light signal to the optical fiber sensor, to receive a sensor signal from the optical fiber sensor, and to process the sensor signal.

2. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, wherein the rolled optical fiber cable has a tensile stress along a longitudinal axis thereof.

3. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, wherein the electronic module includes:

a light source for emitting a carrier light signal;

an acousto-optic modulator (AOM);

a first modulator for splitting the carrier light signal into first and second light signals and sending the first light signal to the optical fiber sensor and the second light signal to the acousto-optic modulator (AOM);

a second modulator for receiving and modulating the sensor signal from the optical fiber sensor and a signal from the AOM; and

a photo detector for converting a signal from the second modulator into an electrical signal.

4. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 3, wherein the first and second modulators are half mirrors.

5. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 3, wherein the first and second modulators are couplers.

6. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 3, wherein the AOM includes a piezo fiber-optic-coil modulator.

7. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 3, wherein the electronic module includes:

a frequency-voltage converter responsive to the electrical signal and operative to convert the frequency shift to a voltage signal.

8. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, wherein the electronic module includes:

a light source for emitting a carrier light signal;

a first modulator for splitting the carrier light signal into first and second light signals and sending the first and second light signals;

an acousto-optic modulator (AOM) for receiving and modulating the first light signal and sending a modulated signal to the optical fiber sensor;

a second modulator for receiving and modulating a sensor signal from the optical fiber sensor and the second light signal from the first modulator; and

a photo detector for converting a signal from the second modulator into an electrical signal.

9. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 8, wherein the first and second modulators are half mirrors.

10. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 8, wherein the first and second modulators are couplers.

11. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 8, wherein the AOM is a disk-type piezo fiber-optic-coil modulator.

12. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 8, wherein the AOM is a cylinder-type piezo fiber-optic-coil modulator.

13. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 8, wherein the electronic module includes:

a frequency-voltage converter responsive to the electrical signal and operative to convert the frequency shift to a voltage signal.

14. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

a first optical switch module for relaying the input light signal sent by the electronic module to the optical fiber sensor; and

a second optical switch module for relaying the sensor signal sent by the optical fiber sensor to the electronic module.

15. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

a first set of optical switch modules arranged in a hierarchical tree structure and operative to relay the input light signal sent by the electronic module to the optical fiber sensor; and

a second set of optical switch modules arranged in a hierarchical tree structure and operative to relay the sensor signal sent by the optical fiber sensor to the electronic module.

16. A diagnostic system as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

one or more couplers for distributing the input light signal sent by the electronic module to one or more optical fiber sensors; and

an optical switch module for relaying the sensor signal sent by one of the optical fiber sensors to the electronic module.

A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the coating layer is formed of material selected from the group consisting of epoxy, polyimide, silicon-polyimide, piezoelectric ceramic polymer, aluminum, copper, gold, silver, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, tantalum oxide, silica, silicon carbide, tungsten carbide, silicon nitride, and graphite.

18. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the coating layer is formed of adhesive material.

19. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the rolled optical fiber cable includes a single-mode polyimide-coated fiber.

20. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the rolled optical fiber cable includes a multi-mode polyimide-coated fiber.

21. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the rolled optical fiber cable is coated with material selected from the group consisting of aluminum, copper, gold, and silica.

22. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the rolled optical fiber has a shape of one selected from the group consisting of circle, oval, slender body, and hollow-tube.

23. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the vibration is generated by Lamb wave propagating through the object.

24. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein the coating layer is formed of piezoelectric material and wherein the optical fiber sensor includes a pair of conductive flakes secured to top and bottom surfaces of the coating layer.

25. A device as recited in claim 24, wherein the piezoelectric material is selected from the group consisting of piezoelectric aluminum nitride and gallium orthophosphate.

26. A device as recited in claim 24, wherein the optical fiber sensor includes a pair of electrical wires for transmitting electrical signals to the pair of conductive flakes, respectively.
