Abstract

A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. The screen is illuminated with light from a light source comprising an array of controllable light-emitters. The controllable-emitters and elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

Claims

1. A display, comprising:

an array of pixels, wherein each pixel comprises a row-by-column array of pixel elements, and each pixel element comprising a plurality of individually controllable primary color light sources;

a controller coupled to each of the primary color light sources and configured to induce a modulation in light emitted from the array of pixels by individually controlling a brightness of each primary color light source; and

,

a local dimming array comprising a series of individually controllable display elements positioned to further modulate the light emitted from the array of pixels.

2. A display according to claim 1 wherein the display is part of a flat panel display device.

3. A display according to claim 1 wherein the display is part of a rear-projection television.

4. A display according to claim 1 wherein the display is a computer monitor.

5. A display according to claim 1 wherein the local dimming array is controlled in part by an estimate of a light pattern projected onto the local dimming array from the array of pixels.

6. A display comprising:

a spatial light modulator comprising a plurality of controllable elements; and

a light source comprising a two-dimensional array of light emitting elements each having an output of light of a color which is controllable to cause the two-dimensional array to project an image of the color specified by image data onto the spatial light modulator;

wherein each of the light emitting elements illuminates multiple ones of the controllable elements, and each of the controllable elements is illuminated by multiple ones of the light emitting elements.
