Abstract

A method of delivering an interactive publication is provided. The interactive publication has interactive elements which each encode an identity of the publication and a position of the respective interactive element on the publication. In the method the interactive elements are associated in a computer system with a digital description of the publication so that the digital description describes a content of the publication and each of the interactive elements, and the digital description is delivered to a printer networked with the computer system to cause the printer to print the interactive publication. The interactive elements are printed to enable user interaction via a sensing device to request information relating to the content of the interactive publication using the associated digital description.

Claims

1. A method of delivering an interactive publication, the interactive publication having interactive elements which each encode an identity of the publication and a position of the respective interactive element on the publication, the method comprising the steps of:

associating, in a computer system, the interactive elements with a digital description of the publication so that the digital description describes a content of the publication and each of the interactive elements; and

delivering the digital description of the publication to a printer networked with the computer system to cause the printer to print the interactive publication, the interactive elements being printed to enable user interaction via a sensing device to request information relating to the content of the interactive publication using the associated digital description.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the requested information relates to editorial content.

3. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the requested information relates to advertising material.

4. A method as claimed in claim 3, wherein the advertising material is included in the printed publication on the basis of demographics of the user.

5. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

receiving, in the computer system, interaction data generated by the sensing device when interacting with the interactive elements of the interactive publication, the interaction data indicating the identity of the publication and a position of the sensing device relative to interactive publication;

retrieving the digital description using the identity of the publication indicated by the interaction data;

identifying each interactive element interacted with using the relative position of the sensing device indicated by the interaction data and the position of each interactive element described in the retrieved digital description; and

initiating an action associated with each interactive element interacted with.

6. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the computer system receives movement data regarding movement of the sensing device relative to the interactive publication.

7. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sensing device includes an identification code specific to a particular user and the method comprises monitoring use of the sensing device in the computer system.

8. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the digital description of the publication is delivered to the printer on demand.

9. A method as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

generating, in the printer, the interactive elements using the identity of the publication; and

printing the content of the publication and the interactive elements onto a substrate to provide the interactive publication.

10. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the content is graphical information.

11. A method as claimed in claim 10, wherein the graphical information is printed substantially simultaneously with the interactive elements.

12. A method as claimed in claim 11, wherein at least some of the graphical information is superimposed with at least some of the interactive elements.

13. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the interactive elements are printed to be substantially invisible in the visible spectrum.

14. A method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the interactive elements are printed as an array of coded tags over the substrate.

15. A method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the interactive publication is a newspaper or magazine.
