1. A display comprising:
- a first array of pixels configured to project individually-selectable amounts of light;
a second array of pixels configured to transmit individually-selectable amounts of light; and
, a controller connected to the first and second arrays, the controller configured to drive the first array to project an approximation of an image specified by image data onto the second array, and to drive the second array to modulate the approximation of the image according to differences between characteristics of light incident on each individual pixel of the second array and desired characteristics of light specified by image data for a location of the image which corresponds to that individual pixel of the second array.

Abstract
A display has a screen which incorporates a light modulator. The screen may be a front projection screen or a rear-projection screen. Elements of the light modulator may be controlled to adjust the intensity of light emanating from corresponding areas on the screen. The display may provide a high dynamic range.

9. A method of displaying an image on a display comprising an array of pixel elements which project light onto a spatial light modulator comprising a plurality of individually-controllable elements, the method comprising:
-
controlling the array of pixel elements to project a pattern of light which approximates an image specified by image data onto the spatial light modulator; and
,controlling the spatial light modulator based on a difference between light incident on each one of the individually-controllable elements and a corresponding location of the image specified by the image data. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13)

14. A computer program product comprising instructions embodied in a tangible medium and operable to display an image defined by image data on a display comprising an array of pixel elements which project light onto a spatial light modulator comprising a plurality of individually-controllable elements, the instructions comprising:
-
at least one instruction operable to control the array of pixel elements to project a pattern of light which approximates an image specified by image data onto the spatial light modulator; and
,at least one instruction operable to control the spatial light modulator based on a difference between light incident on each one of the individually-controllable elements and a corresponding location of the image defined by the image data. - View Dependent Claims (15, 16, 17, 18)

19. A display comprising:
-
a first array of pixels configured to project individually-selectable amounts of light;
a second array of pixels configured to transmit individually-selectable amounts of light; and
,a controller connected to the first and second arrays, the controller configured to drive the first array to project an approximation of an image specified by image data onto the second array, and to drive the second array to locally dim the approximation of the image according to differences between characteristics of light incident on each individual pixel of the second array and desired characteristics of light specified by image data for a location of the image which corresponds to that individual pixel of the second array.
