Abstract

A system and method for determining a location of an orthopaedic medical device includes a controller and an array of antennas. The array of antennas includes a number of coplanar antennas and one or more additional antennas positioned non-coplanar relative to the coplanar antennas. The coplanar and non-coplanar antennas may be directional antennas. The orthopaedic medical device includes a wireless transmitter circuit configured to transmit a wireless signal and may be coupled to a bone of the patient, an orthopaedic implant, or an orthopaedic surgical tool. The controller is electrically coupled to the array of antennas and configured to determine a location of the orthopaedic medical device based on output signals received from the antennas in response to the wireless signal.

Claims

1. A computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system comprising:

an orthopaedic medical device having a first wireless transmitter that is configured to transmit a first wireless signal;

a plurality of first antennas each of which is positioned substantially coplanar with each other;

a second antenna positioned non-coplanar with respect to the plurality of first antennas; and

a controller electrically coupled to the plurality of first antennas and the second antenna, the controller being configured to determine the location of the orthopaedic medical device based on output signals received from the plurality of first antennas and the second antenna in response to the first wireless signal.

2. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the orthopaedic medical device is coupled to an orthopaedic implant.

3. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the orthopaedic medical device is coupled to an orthopaedic surgical tool.

4. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the orthopaedic medical device is configured to be implanted into a bone of a patient.

5. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the first wireless signal is a non-modulated wireless signal.

6. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of first antennas and the second antenna are directional antennas.

7. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 6, wherein the plurality of first antennas and the second antenna are spiral directional antennas.

8. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 6, wherein the plurality of first antennas are positioned such that a boresight of each first antenna is directed toward a common volume of space.

9. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 8, wherein the second antenna is positioned such that a boresight of the second antenna is directed toward the common volume of space.

10. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of first antennas is coupled to a wall of an orthopaedic surgery operating room.

11. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the second antenna is coupled to a ceiling of an orthopaedic surgery operating room.

12. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein:

(i) a first number of the plurality of first antennas is coupled to a first wall of the orthopaedic surgery operating room,

(ii) a second number of the plurality of first antennas is coupled to a second wall of the orthopaedic surgery operating room, and

(iii) a third number of the plurality of first antennas is coupled to a third wall of the orthopaedic surgery operating room.

The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of third antennas coplanar with the second antenna and coupled to a support structure suspended from a ceiling of an orthopaedic surgery operating room, wherein the plurality of third antennas are positioned such that a boresight of each third antenna is directed toward a common volume of space in the orthopaedic surgery operating room.

14. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to determine the location of the orthopaedic medical device by comparing the output signals received from the plurality of first antennas and the second antenna.

15. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 14, wherein the controller is configured to determine the location of the orthopaedic medical device based on the output signals using a radio frequency direction finding algorithm.

16. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, further comprising a display device electrically coupled to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to display indicia of the location of the orthopaedic medical device on the display screen.

17. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 1, further comprising a second wireless transmitter configured to transmit a non-modulated second wireless signal at a frequency different than the frequency of the first wireless signal.

18. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein the second wireless transmitter is coupled to a second orthopaedic medical device implanted in a bone of the patient.

19. A computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system comprising:

a first directional antenna;

a second directional antenna coplanar with the first directional antenna;

a third directional antenna coplanar with the first and second directional antennas;

a fourth directional antenna non-coplanar with respect to the first, second, and third directional antennas; and

a controller electrically coupled to the first, second, third, and fourth directional antennas and configured to;

(i) receive output signals from the first, second, third, and fourth directional antennas, and

(ii) determine a location of an orthopaedic medical device based on the output signals.

20. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth directional antennas are spiral directional antennas.

21. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, wherein the first, second, third, and fourth directional antennas are positioned such that a boresight of each antenna is directed toward a common volume of space.

22. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, wherein the first, second, and third directional antennas are mounted to a wall of an orthopaedic surgery operating room.

23. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, wherein the fourth antenna is mounted to a ceiling of the orthopaedic surgery operating room.

24. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, wherein the controller is configured to determine the location of the orthopaedic medical device by comparing the output signals using a radio frequency direction finding algorithm.

25. The computer assisted surgery system of claim 19, further comprising a display device electrically coupled to the controller, wherein the controller is configured to display indicia of the location of the orthopaedic medical device on the display screen.

26. An implantable orthopaedic medical device for use in determining a location of a bone of a patient, the implantable orthopaedic medical device comprising:

an antenna coil;

a transmitter circuit electrically coupled to the antenna coil and configured to transmit a non-modulated wireless signal at a predetermined frequency using the antenna coil.

The implantable orthopaedic medical device of claim 26, further comprising a switching circuit coupled to the antenna coil and the transmitter circuit, the switching circuit operable to selectively electrically connect the antenna coil to a power terminal of the transmitter circuit or an output terminal of the transmitter circuit.

28. The implantable orthopaedic medical device of claim 26, further comprising a power coil electrically coupled to the transmitter circuit, wherein the power coil is configured to be inductively coupled to a power source external to the patient to supply power to the transmitter circuit.

29. The implantable orthopaedic medical device of claim 26, wherein the power coil comprises a first coil, a second coil, and a third coil,

wherein the first coil, the second coil, and the third coil are orthogonally positioned with respect to each other.

30. The implantable orthopaedic medical device of claim 26, further comprising an internal power source electrically coupled to the transmitter circuit.

31. The implantable orthopaedic medical device of claim 26, further comprising a housing configured to be implanted in the bone of the patient, wherein the antenna coil and the transmitter circuit are position in the housing.

32. A method for determining a location of an orthopaedic medical device having a wireless transmitter associated therewith, the method comprising:

receiving a wireless signal from the wireless transmitter with a plurality of coplanar directional antennas;

receiving the wireless signal with a directional antenna positioned non-coplanar with respect to the coplanar directional antennas;

receiving output signals from each of the directional antennas;

comparing the output signals; and

determining data indicative of the location of the orthopaedic medical device based on the comparing steps.

33. The method of claim 32, wherein the wireless signal is a non-modulated wireless signal.

34. The method of claim 32, wherein receiving the wireless signal from the wireless transmitter with the plurality of coplanar directional antennas comprises receiving the wireless signal from the wireless transmitter with a plurality of spiral directional antennas.

35. The method of claim 32, wherein receiving the wireless signal with the directional antenna positioned non-coplanar with respect to the coplanar directional antennas comprises receiving the wireless signal with a spiral directional antenna.

36. The method of claim 32, wherein comparing step comprises comparing the amplitude of the output signals.

37. The method of claim 32, wherein comparing step comprises comparing the phase of the output signals.

38. The method of claim 32, wherein comparing step comprises comparing the Doppler frequency shift of the output signals.

39. The method of claim 32, wherein comparing step comprises comparing the differential time of arrival of the output signals.

40. The method of claim 32, further comprising displaying indicia of the location of the orthopaedic medical device on a display device based on the determining step.
