Abstract

A coiled member of a medical device extends along a length of an elongate body of the device. A surface of the coiled member extends at an angle, with respect to a longitudinal axis of the body, from a first edge to a second edge, toward the proximal end of the body, such that the first edge of the surface is disposed in close proximity to the body and the second edge of the surface is spaced apart from the body.

Claims

1. A medical device, comprising:

an elongate body including a proximal end and a distal end; and

a coil extending along a length of the body between the proximal and distal ends and including a surface having a first edge and a second edge, the first edge extending along a helical path of the coil, wherein the surface of the coil extends at an angle, with respect to a longitudinal axis of the body, from the first edge to the second edge, toward the proximal end of the body, and wherein the first edge of the surface is disposed in close proximity to the body and the second edge of the surface is spaced apart from the body.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the second edge of the surface extends along the helical path of the coil.

3. The device of claim 1, wherein the coil comprises a conductive wire having a rectangular cross-section including a first side positioned opposite a second side, and wherein one of the first and second sides comprises the surface.

4. The device of claim 1, wherein the second edge of the surface is serrated.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein the coil comprises a conductive wire and a relatively flat strip coupled together, and wherein the surface is formed by the strip.

6. The device of claim 5, wherein the second edge of the surface is serrated.

7. The device of claim 5, wherein the conductive wire includes an electrode surface adjacent the strip.

8. The device of claim 5 wherein the strip comprises a bioabsorbable material.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the surface comprises an electrode surface.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the first edge of the surface is fixedly engaged with the body.

11. A medical device, comprising:

an elongate body including a proximal end and a distal end;

a coiled wire; and

a coiled fixation strip including a first edge and a second edge, the first edge of the strip being disposed in close proximity to the body and the second edge of the strip being spaced apart from the body, wherein the wire extends adjacent to the fixation strip along a helical path extending along a portion of the body between the proximal and distal ends, and wherein the fixation strip extends at an angle, with respect to a longitudinal axis of the body, from the first edge to the second edge, toward the proximal end of the body.

12. The device of claim 11, wherein the second edge of the strip is serrated.

13. The device of claim 11, wherein the first edge of the strip is fixedly engaged with the body.

14. The device of claim 11, wherein the wire includes an electrode surface adjacent the strip.

15. The device of claim 11, wherein the wire and the strip are bonded together.

16. The device of claim 11, wherein the strip comprises a bioabsorbable material.

17. A medical electrical defibrillation lead, comprising:

an elongate body including a proximal end and a distal end; and

a coiled defibrillation electrode extending along a length of the body between the proximal and distal ends and including a surface having a first edge and a second edge, the first edge extending along a helical path of the defibrillation electrode, wherein the surface of the coiled defibrillation electrode extends at an angle, with respect to a longitudinal axis of the body, from the first edge to the second edge, toward the proximal end of the body, and wherein the first edge of the surface is disposed in close proximity to the body and the second edge of the surface is spaced apart from the body.

18. The lead of claim 17, wherein the second edge of the surface extends along the helical path of the coiled defibrillation electrode.

19. The device of claim 17, wherein the coiled defibrillation electrode comprises a conductive wire having a rectangular cross-section including a first side positioned opposite a second side, and wherein one of the first and second sides comprises the surface.

20. The lead of claim 17, wherein the coiled defibrillation electrode comprises a wire and a relatively flat strip fixedly engaged with the wire, and wherein the surface is formed by the strip.

21. The lead of claim 20, wherein the second edge of the surface is serrated.

22. The lead of claim 20, wherein the strip comprises a bioabsorbable material.

23. The lead of claim 17, wherein the first edge of the surface is fixedly engaged with the body.
