Abstract

A biosensor strip having a low profile for reducing the volume of liquid sample needed to perform an assay. In one embodiment, the biosensor strip includes an electrode support; an electrode arrangement on the electrode support; a cover; a sample chamber; and an incompressible element placed between the cover and the electrode support, the incompressible element providing an opening in at least one side or in the distal end of the sample chamber to provide at least one vent in the sample chamber. In another embodiment, the biosensor strip has an electrode support; an electrode arrangement on the electrode support; a cover; and a sample chamber, the cover having a plurality of openings formed therein, at least one of the openings in register with the sample chamber. The invention further includes methods for preparing such a biosensor strips in a continuous manner.

Claims

1. A biosensor to determine the concentration of an analyte in a sample, the biosensor comprising:

(a) an electrode support;

(b) an electrode arrangement on the electrode support;

(c) a cover;

(d) a sample chamber between the electrode support and the cover, at least a portion of the electrode arrangement present in the sample chamber, the sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 1 microliter; and

(e) an incompressible element within the sample chamber providing at least one vent from the sample chamber.

2. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the at least one vent is in at least one side of the sample chamber.

3. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the at least one vent is in a distal end of the sample chamber.

4. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the incompressible element is selected from the group consisting of at least one filament, at least one thread, at least one ribbon, and at least one tape.

5. The biosensor of claim 1, further comprising at least one layer of mesh is interposed between the cover and the electrode arrangement.

6. The biosensor of claim 5, wherein the at least one layer of mesh comprises polyester.

7. The biosensor of claim 5, wherein the at least one layer of mesh comprises a surfactant thereon.

8. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the cover includes a backing having a layer of adhesive on one major surface thereof.

9. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.5 microliters.

10. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.3 microliters.

11. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.2 microliters.

12. The biosensor of claim 1, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.1 microliter.

13. The biosensor of claim 1, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte in about 1-10 seconds.

14. The biosensor of claim 1, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte in about 3-5 seconds.

15. The biosensor of claim 1, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte in about 1-3 seconds.

16. The biosensor of claim 1, configured to determine the concentration of glucose.

17. A biosensor to determine the concentration of an analyte in a sample, the biosensor comprising:

(a) an electrode support;

(b) an electrode arrangement on the electrode support;

(c) a cover; and

(d) a sample chamber between the electrode support and the cover, at least a portion of the electrode arrangement present in the sample chamber, the sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 1 microliters; and

(e) at least one of the electrode support or the cover having a plurality of openings formed therein, at least one of the openings in register with the sample chamber.

18. The biosensor of claim 17, further comprising at least one layer of mesh between the cover and the electrode arrangement in the sample chamber.

19. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the at least one layer of mesh comprises polyester.

20. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the at least one layer of mesh comprises a surfactant thereon.

21. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the cover includes a backing having a layer of adhesive on one major surface thereof.

22. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the openings have been formed by a laser.

23. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the openings have been formed by a mechanical device.

24. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.5 microliters.

25. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.3 microliters.

26. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.2 microliters.

27. The biosensor of claim 17, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.1 microliters.

28. A biosensor to determine the concentration of an analyte in a sample, the biosensor comprising:

(a) an electrode support having an electrode arrangement thereon;

(c) a cover; and

(d) a sample chamber between the electrode support and the cover, at least a portion of the electrode arrangement present in the sample chamber, the sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 0.3 microliters;

(e) an incompressible element within the sample chamber, the incompressible element providing an opening in at least one of the first side, the second side or in the distal end of the sample chamber to provide at least one vent in the sample chamber; and

(f) the biosensor configured to determine the concentration of the analyte within about 10 seconds.

29. The biosensor of claim 28, wherein the electrode support has a plurality of openings formed therein, at least one of the openings in register with the sample chamber.

30. The biosensor of claim 28, wherein the cover has a plurality of openings formed therein, at least one of the openings in register with the sample chamber.

31. The biosensor of claim 28, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte within about 5-10 seconds.

32. The biosensor of claim 28, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte within about 3-5 seconds.

33. The biosensor of claim 28, configured to determine the concentration of the analyte within about 1-3 seconds.

34. The biosensor of claim 28, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.2 microliters.

35. The biosensor of claim 28, wherein the sample chamber volume is no more than about 0.1 microliters.

36. A method of determining the concentration of an analyte comprising:

(a) providing a biosensor comprising;

(i) an electrode support having an electrode arrangement on the electrode support;

(ii) a cover;

(iii) a sample chamber between the electrode support and the cover, at least a portion of the electrode arrangement present in the sample chamber, the sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 1 microliter; and

(iv) an incompressible element within the sample chamber, the incompressible element providing an opening in at least one of the first side, the second side or in the distal end of the sample chamber to provide at least one vent in the sample chamber;

(b) providing a blood sample into the sample chamber;

(c) within about 10 seconds of providing the blood sample into the sample chamber, obtaining the analyte concentration.

37. The method of claim 36, wherein obtaining the analyte concentration comprises:

(a) within about 5 seconds of providing the blood sample into the sample chamber, obtaining the analyte concentration.

38. The method of claim 36, wherein obtaining the analyte concentration comprises:

(a) within about 3 seconds of providing the blood sample into the sample chamber, obtaining the analyte concentration.

39. The method of claim 36, wherein obtaining the analyte concentration comprises:

(a) within about 2 seconds of providing the blood sample into the sample chamber, obtaining the analyte concentration.

40. The method of claim 36, wherein providing a biosensor comprises:

(a) providing a biosensor comprising a sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 0.5 microliters.

41. The method of claim 36, wherein providing a biosensor comprises:

(a) providing a biosensor comprising a sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 0.3 microliters.

42. The method of claim 36, wherein providing a biosensor comprises:

(a) providing a biosensor comprising a sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 0.2 microliters.

43. The method of claim 36, wherein providing a biosensor comprises:

(a) providing a biosensor comprising a sample chamber having a volume of no more than about 0.1 microliter.
