Abstract

There are provided an information providing system, a reproduction device and method, an information providing device and method, a recording medium, and a program capable of comparatively freely utilizing the content recorded on a disc according to the user preference. When download of an audio file of Japanese language is instructed, the update file of the content recorded on the optical disc (11) is downloaded. The Audio stream file as an audio file of Japanese language, the Clip Information file accompanying it, the Play List file controlling the reproduction of the Audio stream file, and the navigation program file which has been updated are recorded as the update file in a local storage (12). By the navigation program which has been updated, for example, the Audio stream file of Clip 3 as the Japanese language audio is reproduced. The present invention can be applied to a player to which a recording medium where the content has been recorded is detachably attached.

Claims

1. An information providing system having a reproducing apparatus and an information providing apparatus interconnected via a network,

said reproducing apparatus including:

a readout section configured to read from a recording medium identification information about said recording medium which is removable and which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream;

a recording control section configured to acquire second control information constituting an update of said first control information from said information providing apparatus in accordance with said identification information read out by said readout section, said recording control section further recording said second control information to a recording section; and

a reproduction control section configured to control reproduction of said AV stream based on said second control information recorded to said recording section by said recording control section,

said information providing apparatus including;

an acquisition section configured to acquire from a database said second control information to be provided to said reproducing apparatus in accordance with said identification information sent from said reproducing apparatus; and

a provision section configured to provide said reproducing apparatus with said second control information acquired by said acquisition section.

2. A reproducing apparatus comprising:

a readout section configured to read from a recording medium identification information about said recording medium which is removable and which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream;

a recording control section configured to acquire second control information constituting an update of said first control information from an information providing apparatus connected via a network, the acquisition being made in accordance with said identification information read out by said readout section, said recording control section further recording said second control information to a recording section; and

a reproduction control section configured to control reproduction of said AV stream based on said second control information recorded to said recording section by said recording control section.

The reproducing apparatus according to claim 2, wherein said recording control section records to a directory of said recording section said second control information and said AV stream of which the reproduction is controlled in accordance with said second control information, said directory being furnished with a name including said identification information.

4. The reproducing apparatus according to claim 2, wherein

said recording control section acquires other AV streams along with said second control information from said information providing apparatus and records what is acquired to said recording section,

said reproduction control section controls reproduction said other AV streams in accordance with said second control information.

The reproducing apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said second control information includes information for designating reproduction segments of said AV stream recorded on said recording medium, and information for designating reproduction segments of said other AV streams acquired from said information providing apparatus along with said second control information.

6. The reproducing apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising an authentication section configured to authenticate said information providing apparatus by querying said information providing apparatus about part of the information recorded on said recording medium.

7. The reproducing apparatus according to claim 2, further comprising an authentication section configured to authenticate said second control information by querying said information providing apparatus about part of said second control information.

8. A reproducing method comprising the steps of:

reading from a recording medium identification information about said recording medium which is removable and which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream;

acquiring second control information constituting an update of said first control information from an information providing apparatus connected via a network, the acquisition being made in accordance with said identification information read out in said reading step, said acquiring step further recording said second control information to a recording section; and

controlling reproduction of said AV stream based on said second control information recorded to said recording section in said acquiring step.

9. A program for causing a computer to carry out a procedure comprising the steps of:

reading from a recording medium identification information about said recording medium which is removable and which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream;

acquiring second control information constituting an update of said first control information from an information providing apparatus connected via a network, the acquisition being made in accordance with said identification information read out in said reading step, said acquiring step further recording said second control information to a recording section; and

controlling reproduction of said AV stream based on said second control information recorded to said recording section in said acquiring step.

10. An information providing apparatus connected via a network to a reproducing apparatus loaded with a recording medium which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream, said information providing apparatus comprising:

an acquisition section configured to acquire from a database second control information which constitutes an update of said first control information and which is provided to said reproducing apparatus in accordance with identification information about said recording medium sent from said reproducing apparatus; and

a provision section configured to provide said reproducing apparatus with said second control information acquired by said acquisition section.

11. The information providing apparatus according to claim 10, wherein

said acquisition section acquires other AV streams along with said second control information from said database,

said provision section provides said reproducing apparatus with said other AV streams together with said second control information.

An information providing method for use with an information providing apparatus connected via a network to a reproducing apparatus loaded with a recording medium which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream, said information providing method comprising the steps of:

acquiring from a database second control information which constitutes an update of said first control information and which is provided to said reproducing apparatus in accordance with identification information about said recording medium sent from said reproducing apparatus; and

providing said reproducing apparatus with said second control information acquired in said acquiring step.

13. A program for causing a computer to carrying out a procedure on an information providing apparatus connected via a network to a reproducing apparatus loaded with a recording medium which stores an AV stream and first control information for controlling reproduction of said AV stream, said procedure comprising the steps of:

acquiring from a database second control information which constitutes an update of said first control information and which is provided to said reproducing apparatus in accordance with identification information about said recording medium sent from said reproducing apparatus; and

providing said reproducing apparatus with said second control information acquired in said acquiring step.

14. A recording medium removable to a reproducing apparatus, said recording medium having information recorded thereon comprising:

an AV stream;

first control information for use by said reproducing apparatus in controlling reproduction of said AV stream; and

identification information for use by said reproducing apparatus in acquiring second control information constituting an update of said first control information from an information providing apparatus connected via a network to said reproducing apparatus.
