Abstract

Methods and systems for remote band scanning in multipoint-to-point orthogonal frequency division multiplexing communication are provided. In one embodiment, a method for a remote unit of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multipoint-to-point communications system comprises: establishing communication between a first remote unit of a plurality of remote units and a host unit, the plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit in a multipoint-to-point configuration, wherein establishing communication includes the first remote unit scanning a frequency range for a signal from the host unit; and transmitting up to a plurality of tones from the first remote unit based on the signal from the host unit, the up to a plurality of tones modulated with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing.

Claims

1. A method for a remote unit of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multipoint-to-point communications system, the method comprising:

establishing communication between a first remote unit of a plurality of remote units and a host unit, the plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit in a multipoint-to-point configuration, wherein establishing communication includes the first remote unit scanning a frequency range for a signal from the host unit; and

transmitting up to a plurality of tones from the first remote unit based on the signal from the host unit, the up to a plurality of tones modulated with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising receiving a tone allocation from the host unit for transmitting the upstream information.

The method of claim 1, further comprising adjusting at least one characteristic of the plurality of tones such that when any tones are transmitted from the first remote unit and at least one other remote unit of the plurality of remote units, the orthogonality of the tones when received at the host unit is improved.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein adjusting at least one characteristic of the plurality of tones comprises adjusting at least one of a carrier frequency, a carrier amplitude, and a phase.

5. A method for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing multipoint-to-point communications system, the method comprising:

transmitting a downstream control signal from a multipoint-to-point host unit, the downstream control signal indicating a frequency band for receiving downstream information;

establishing communications with a first remote unit of a plurality of remote units based on the downstream control signal; and

receiving an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform at the multipoint-to-point host unit, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of tones transmitted by the plurality of remote units.

6. The method of claim 5, further comprising allocating up to the plurality of tones to the first remote unit.

7. A bi-directional communication system, the system comprising:

a multipoint-to-point host unit; and

a plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the multipoint-to-point host unit through an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform;

wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit is configured to transmit a downstream control signal;

wherein a first remote unit of the plurality of remote units is configured to scan a frequency range for the downstream control signal and establish communications with the multipoint-to-point host unit based on the downstream control signal.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit is configured to receive the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform, the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of tones transmitted by the plurality of remote units.

The system of claim 7, the first remote unit including a modulator for modulating up to a plurality of tones with upstream information using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing, wherein the modulator is configured to adjust at least one characteristic of the plurality of tones such that when any tones are transmitted from the first remote unit and at least one other remote unit of the plurality of remote units, the orthogonality of the tones when received at the host unit is improved.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the modulator is configured to adjust at least one of a carrier frequency, a carrier amplitude, and a phase.

11. The system of claim 7, wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit is configured to allocate up to a plurality of tones of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform to the first remote unit based on a tone allocation request from the first remote unit.

12. The system of claim 7, wherein the multipoint-to-point host unit is configured to allocate up to a plurality of tones of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform to the first remote unit based on a characteristic of upstream information to be transmitted by the first remote unit.

13. The system of claim 7, wherein a plurality of tones of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform are received concurrently from at least two of the plurality of remote units.
