Abstract

A system and method for managing mobile device communication in an enterprise includes a device management agent and a synchronization agent in the mobile device. Information about the status of the mobile device is collected by the device management agent and the synchronization agent communicates the status information to the enterprise with which the mobile device is associated. A synchronization server at the enterprise collects device information and updates records at the enterprise. Information such as device telephone number is propagated to the enterprise directory and potentially to a PBX to ensure connectivity with the mobile device.

Claims

1. A mobile communication device subsystem, the said device being associated with a defined enterprise and capable of communicating with a host system for the enterprise, the subsystem comprising

a device management agent operative on the device for obtaining and managing status information for the device and

a synchronization agent operative on the device for initiating communication with the host system for the enterprise for communicating said device status information from the device to the host system, whereby the device status information is usable by the host system to manage communication with the device.

The mobile communication device subsystem of claim 1 in which the synchronization agent is further operative on the device to receive status information relating to other mobile communication devices associated with the enterprise and interoperative with the device management agent to update a data store in the device to reflect the received status information.

The mobile communication device subsystem of claim 1 in which the device management agent and the synchronization agent are further interoperative on the device to obtain and communicate to the host system one or more interests in status information for other devices associated with the enterprise.

The mobile communication device subsystem of claim 1 in which the status information for the device comprises one or more of a current telephone number by which the device can be reached, a dynamic network identifier for the device, the physical location of the device, and the in cradle status of the device.

5. A method for managing communication to a mobile communication device associated with an enterprise having a host system, the method comprising the steps of

a. interrogating the device to obtain device status information,

b. communicating the status information from the device to the host system, and

c. the host system receiving the status information and updating enterprise records so as to manage communications to the device.

6. The method of claim 5 in which the step of updating enterprise records comprises the step of storing data in a device management database maintained by the host system.

7. The method of claim 5 in which the step of updating enterprise records comprises the step of forwarding the status information to a further device associated with the enterprise to permit updating of records maintained on the said further device.

8. The method of claim 5 further comprising the step of the host system recording an interest in the mobile communication device status information by one or more users or devices associated with the enterprise.

The method of claim 8, in which the step of updating enterprise records comprises the step of forwarding the status information to a further device associated with the enterprise, and for which device an interest is registered by the one or more users or devices, to permit updating of records maintained on the said further device.

A computing device program product for carrying out management of mobile communications, the computing device program product comprising a computing device usable medium having computing device readable program product code embodied in said medium, said program code being executable by a processor of a mobile device and a processor of a host system, respectively, for implementing the method of claim 5.

A computing device program product for carrying out management of mobile communications, the computing device program product comprising a computing device usable medium having computing device readable program product code embodied in said medium, said program code being executable by a processor of a mobile device and a processor of a host system, respectively, for implementing the method of claim 7.

A computing device program product for carrying out management of mobile communications, the computing device program product comprising a computing device usable medium having computing device readable program product code embodied in said medium, said program code being executable by a processor of a mobile device and a processor of a host system, respectively, for implementing the method of claim 8.

A computing device program product for carrying out management of mobile communications, the computing device program product comprising a computing device usable medium having computing device readable program product code embodied in said medium, said program code being executable by a processor of a mobile device and a processor of a host system, respectively, for implementing the method of claim 9.
