Abstract

Content identifiers are associated with respective metadata. Through use of the metadata, a user'"'"'s experience with the content can be enhanced. A variety of other arrangements are also detailed.

Claims

1. A method employing a portable device including a data structure, the method comprising:

in said portable device, discerning an identifier from electronic content, wherein certain identifiers have information corresponding thereto in the data structure, and others do not;

if the discerned identifier has information corresponding thereto in the data structure, taking action based on said information; and

if the discerned identifier has no information corresponding thereto in the data structure, then in at least certain cases;

sending data related to the discerned identifier to a first remote computer;

from said first remote computer, forwarding at least part of said sent data to one or more successive remote computers, based on at least part of said data;

receiving, at the portable device, information from one of said successive remote computers that corresponds to the discerned identifier; and

taking action based on the received information.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said discerning comprises applying a mathematic algorithm to said electronic content to produce said identifier.

3. A method comprising:

in a portable device, discerning an identifier from electronic content;

receiving biometric data from a user of said device; and

taking an action, wherein said action is dependent both on said discerned identifier and on said biometric data.

4. The method of claim 3 that includes discerning said identifier by applying a mathematical procedure to data representing human-perceptible features of said electronic content.

5. In a system that responds to user submission of content identifiers to trigger actions corresponding thereto, a first content identifier being associated with a first content owner, and a second content identifier being associated with a different content owner, a method that includes monitoring submitted content identifiers to compile information related thereto, reporting a first subset of said compiled information to the first content owner, and reporting a second different subset of said compiled information to the second content owner.
