Abstract

In a method for organizing information in a database, abstractions are separated from expressions of the abstractions to obtain a first set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions. Each abstraction is arranged within the first set of information hierarchically within the database. Each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the second set of information is associated with an abstraction within the database.

Claims

1. A method for organizing information in a database, comprising:

separating abstractions from expressions of the abstractions to obtain a first set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions, wherein the abstractions include legal theories and the expressions of the abstractions include judicial decisions;

arranging each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database; and

associating each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the second set of information with an abstraction within the database.

2. The method according to claim 1, wherein each abstraction is a proposition of law.

3. The method according to claim 1, wherein each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction is a judicial decision.

4. The method according to claim 1, wherein the arrangement of each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database creates a taxonomy having a plurality of levels.

5. The method according to claim 4, wherein each level in the taxonomy includes at least one node.

6. The method according to claim 5, wherein each node is a legal theory or a proposition of law.

7. The method according to claim 5, wherein each node that is not a top level node includes a subdivision of information from a node at the next higher level in the taxonomy.

8. The method according to claim 4, wherein each level in the taxonomy includes at least one element or node.

9. The method according to claim 8, wherein the at least one element or node is subordinate to a second element or node in the taxonomy.

10. The method according to claim 8, wherein each element or node is represented by a plurality of words.

11. The method according to claim 10, wherein the plurality of words does not exceed five words.

12. The method according to claim 1, wherein each expression of an abstraction provides support for the abstraction.

13. The method according to claim 12, wherein the support is classified within the set of characteristics relating to the expression of the abstraction as either positive or negative.

14. The method according to claim 12, wherein the support is classified within the set of characteristics relating to the expression of the abstraction as either positive, negative or uncertain.

15. The method according to claim 12, wherein the support is uncertain.

16. The method according to claim 1, wherein each expression of an abstraction is classified according to predetermined criteria within the second set of information.

17. A method for organizing information in a database, comprising:

separating abstractions from expressions of the abstractions to obtain a first set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions;

arranging each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database; and

associating each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the second set of information with an abstraction within the database.

18. A system for organizing information, comprising:

a processor;

a database, wherein the database contains a first set of information comprising abstractions and a second set of information comprising at least one set of characteristics relating to expressions of abstractions, wherein each abstraction within the first set of information is arranged hierarchically within the database, wherein each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the second set of information is associated with an abstraction within the database, and wherein the abstractions include legal theories and the expressions of the abstractions include judicial decisions.

19. The system according to claim 18, wherein each abstraction is a proposition.

20. The system according to claim 18, wherein each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction is an authority.

21. The system according to claim 18, wherein the arrangement of each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database creates a taxonomy having a plurality of levels.

22. The system according to claim 18, wherein each expression of an abstraction provides support for the abstraction.

23. The system according to claim 18, wherein each expression of an abstraction is classified according to predetermined criteria within the second set of information.

24. A computer program product to be used with a processor, the computer program product comprising:

a computer usable medium having computer readable program code embodied therein to be used when organizing information in a database, the computer readable program code including;

computer readable program code to be used when separating abstractions from expressions of the abstractions to obtain a first set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions, wherein the abstractions include legal theories and the expressions of the abstractions include judicial decisions;

computer readable program code to be used when arranging each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database; and

computer readable program code to be used when associating each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the second set of information with an abstraction within the database.

25. The system according to claim 24, wherein each abstraction is a proposition.

26. The system according to claim 24, wherein each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction is an authority.

27. The system according to claim 24, wherein the arrangement of each abstraction within the first set of information hierarchically within the database creates a taxonomy having a plurality of levels.

28. The system according to claim 24, wherein each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction provides support for the abstraction.

29. The system according to claim 24, wherein each expression of an abstraction is classified according to predetermined criteria within the second set of information.

30. A method for locating information in an electronic database, comprising:

providing access to a database that includes a first set of information corresponding to an abstraction and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to an expression of the abstraction arranged hierarchically within the database;

receiving at least one parameter for a search;

searching the database using the at least one parameter for the search; and

identifying at least one abstraction and at least one expression of the abstraction that relate to the at least one parameter for the search.

31. A method for automatically organizing information in a database, comprising:

separating abstractions from expressions of the abstractions to obtain a first set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a second set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions;

obtaining a third set of information corresponding to the abstractions and a fourth set of information corresponding to at least one set of characteristics relating to the expressions of the abstractions by mimicking the steps utilized to separate the abstractions from expressions of the abstractions;

arranging each abstraction within the third set of information hierarchically within the database; and

associating each set of characteristics relating to an expression of an abstraction within the fourth set of information with an abstraction within the database.
