Abstract

A reduced noise and selectively configurable plasma device is capable of interpreting electromagnetic signals having an operating frequency and has a plasma mechanism with a plasma that is ionizable to a plasma frequency. An ionizing mechanism for ionizing the plasma and a control that is operative to control the ionizing mechanism, ionize the plasma to the plasma frequency by application of plasma ionizing energy pulses. An interpreting mechanism operates to interpret the electromagnetic signals only in a period between ionization of the plasma with the energy pulses.

Claims

1. A reduced noise and selectively configurable plasma device for interpreting electromagnetic signals having operating frequencies, the device comprising:

plasma means having a plasma that is ionizable to a plasma frequency;

ionizing means for ionizing the plasma;

control means connected to the ionizing means to control the ionizing means to ionize the plasma to the plasma frequency by application of plasma ionizing energy pulses; and

interpreting means operative to interpret the electromagnetic signals only during periods between ionization of the plasma with the energy pulses so that interpretation of the electromagnetic signals occurs only during afterglow periods for the plasma and thereby reducing noise.

A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the plasma means is selected from the group consisting of a plasma antenna, a plasma linear antenna array, a plasma antenna planar array, nested plasma antennas, a plasma frequency selective surface, stacked plasma frequency selective surfaces, a plasma cylindrical annular ring around an antenna, a plasma reflector, a plasma filter, a plasma lamp, a plasma limiter, a plasma switch, a plasma window, a plasma screen, and a plasma phase shifter.

3. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the device is configured to minimize at least one of electromagnetic, phase, thermal and shot noise.

4. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the control means controls the ionizing means so that the operating frequency is at least twice the plasma frequency, so that plasma aperture, internal electric field in the plasma, or internal current in the plasma is maximized.

5. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein ionizing the plasma is performed by application of at least one of voltage, laser, radio frequency waves, radio frequency excitation, radioactivity, pressure, acoustical waves, or acoustical pulses.

6. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein ionizing is performed by energy pulsing to reduce power requirements.

A configurable device according to claim 6, wherein ionizing is performed by pulsing with opposite alternating positive and negative energy polarities supplied by voltage, current, laser, radio frequency waves, radio frequency excitation, radioactivity, pressure, acoustical waves, or acoustical pulses to reduce power requirements, and thermal, phase and shot noise.

A configurable device according to claim 6, wherein ionizing is performed by pulsing with positive or negative energy polarities supplied by voltage, current, laser, radio frequency waves, radio frequency excitation, radioactivity, pressure, acoustical waves, or acoustical pulses to reduce power requirements, thermal, phase and shot noise.

9. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the controller comprises at least one of a digital signal processor and a microprocessor.

10. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the controller is operated manually.

11. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the plasma is ionized by application of opposite alternating positive and negative energy polarities supplied by voltage, current, laser, or RF waves to reduce power requirements, and thermal, phase, and shot noise.

12. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the plasma device comprises a single pure gas ionizable gas element to reduce thermal, phase and shot noise.

13. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the plasma means includes a container in which the plasma is ionizable to a plasma frequency such that the plasma frequency equals the operating frequency times an inverse of a geometric factor characteristic of the device.

14. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the ionizing means ionizes the plasma to have an average direct current in the plasma of zero for reducing thermal, shot and phase noise in the plasma means.

15. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein, in combination with said device that defines a first plasma antenna which is in wireless communication with a second plasma antenna comprising another one of said device, and wherein the communications between said antennas are synchronized such that the antennas are transmitting and receiving in an afterglow mode after ionization of the plasma with a selected energy pulse.

A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein power requirements of the device are lower when the operating frequency of the plasma device is equal to the plasma frequency times a geometric factor instead of at a plasma frequency that is several times higher than or lower than the operating frequency.

A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein power requirements and phase, shot and thermal noise are reduced by using at least one of radioactive radon gas in the plasma means, the radon gas yielding self ionization through radioactivity, and radioactive seeds used in at least one of inert gases and mercury vapor.

18. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein said plasma device has a selected shape and geometry so that the device tunes plasma frequencies in various parts of the device to phase shift multiple signals through the device.

A configurable device according to claim 18, wherein a geometric resonance of the selected shape and geometry, and a plasma resonance of the ionized plasma are used simultaneously to maximize aperture by matching the operating frequency to a geometric factor of the selected shape and geometry, times the plasma frequency.

20. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the device has one of:

a donut shape;

an annular cylindrical shape;

a spherical shape; and

a spheriodal shape.

21. A configurable device according to claim 1, wherein the plasma device comprises an ionizable gas with Ramsauer-Townsend effects to reduce thermal, phase and shot noise.

22. A method for operating a plasma device having a plasma ionizable at a plasma frequency, the plasma device being for transmitting or receiving a source operating signal having an operating frequency to optimize at least one of a antenna aperture of the device, internal electric field in the plasma, or internal current in the plasma, and reduce thermal noise, shot noise, and phase noise of the plasma device, the method comprising:

generating the plasma to have an afterglow period; and

transmitting or receiving a source operating signal only during the afterglow period.

A method for operating a plasma device having a plasma ionizable at a plasma frequency, the plasma device having a plasma at least partially surrounding an internal source of electromagnetic waves for transmitting, receiving, or reflecting a source operating signal having an operating frequency which can be changed with respect to the plasma frequency, or a plasma frequency which can be changed with respect to the operating frequency such that an electromagnetic resonance cavity is created by varying a plasma frequency with respect to the source operating frequency or by varying the operating frequency with respect to the plasma frequency, wherein the plasma is ionized to a plasma frequency by pulsing with plasma ionizing energy pulses, and wherein the source operating signal is transmitted, received, or reflected only during an afterglow period between the energy pulses.

A method according to claim 23, wherein the resonance cavity releases electromagnetic waves to the outside by increasing or decreasing the plasma density or plasma frequency with respect to the operating frequency of the internal source throughout the plasma or in sections of the plasma or by increasing or decreasing the operating frequency of the internal source with respect to plasma density or plasma frequency throughout the plasma or in sections of the plasma.

25. A method according to claim 24, wherein the plasma density is selectively varied in space and/or time to configure directivity, gain or aperture of the electromagnetic waves from the internal source.
