Abstract

A system, method and computer readable medium are provided for monitoring functionality of multiple network interfaces and providing fault recovery. The network interfaces are grouped into nodes and a monitoring address is assigned to each of the network interfaces such that the monitoring address for each of the network interfaces is on a different subnet than the monitoring addresses for all of the other network interfaces in the same node as that network interface. According to the method, each of the network interfaces is assigned one or more recovery addresses that each are different than its monitoring address. A monitoring message is periodically sent to each of the network interfaces via the monitoring addresses in order to determine the functionality of the network interfaces. If no monitoring message is received within a predetermined period, a recovery operation is performed for one of the network interfaces using one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface.

Claims

1. A method for monitoring functionality of a plurality of network interfaces and providing fault recovery, the network interfaces being grouped into a plurality of nodes and a monitoring address being assigned to each of the network interfaces such that the monitoring address for each of the network interfaces is on a different subnet than the monitoring addresses for all of the other network interfaces in the same node as that network interface, the method comprising the steps of:

periodically sending a monitoring message to each of the network interfaces via the monitoring addresses in order to determine the functionality of the network interfaces; and

if no monitoring message is received within a predetermined period, performing a recovery operation for one of the network interfaces using one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface,

wherein each of the network interfaces is assigned one or more recovery addresses that each are different than its monitoring address.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of automatically generating the monitoring addresses for the network interfaces.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the automatically generating step includes the sub-step of generating the monitoring address for the first network interface in each node by adding the base address to a node index for that node.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the automatically generating step further includes the sub-step of:

generating the monitoring address for the second network interface in each node using the node index for that node in the formula;

((network ID+subnet increment) AND host ID)+node index,

wherein the network ID and the host ID are based on the base address and the subnet mask, and

the subnet increment is based on the subnet mask.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the performing step includes the sub-step of:

if no monitoring message is received within the predetermined period, sending a failure notification with the monitoring address of the one network interface.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the performing step further includes the sub-steps of:

determining the one or more recovery addresses to be recovered based on the monitoring address in the failure notification; and

performing the recovery operation for the one network interface using the one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface.

7. A computer readable medium including computer instructions for monitoring functionality of a plurality of network interfaces and providing fault recovery, the network interfaces being grouped into a plurality of nodes and a monitoring address being assigned to each of the network interfaces such that the monitoring address for each of the network interfaces is on a different subnet than the monitoring addresses for all of the other network interfaces in the same node as that network interface, the computer instructions including instructions for performing the steps of:

periodically sending a monitoring message to each of the network interfaces via the monitoring addresses in order to determine the functionality of the network interfaces; and

if no monitoring message is received within a predetermined period, performing a recovery operation for one of the network interfaces using one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface,

wherein each of the network interfaces is assigned one or more recovery addresses that each are different than its monitoring address.

8. The computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the computer instructions further including instructions for performing the step of automatically generating the monitoring addresses for the network interfaces.

9. The computer readable medium of claim 8, wherein the automatically generating step includes the sub-step of generating the monitoring address for the first network interface in each node by adding the base address to a node index for that node.

10. The computer readable medium of claim 9, wherein the automatically generating step further includes the sub-step of:

generating the monitoring address for the second network interface in each node using the node index for that node in the formula;

((network ID+subnet increment) AND host ID)+node index,

wherein the network ID and the host ID are based on the base address and the subnet mask, and

the subnet increment is based on the subnet mask.

11. The computer readable medium of claim 7, wherein the performing step includes the sub-steps of:

if no monitoring message is received within the predetermined period, sending a failure notification with the monitoring address of the one network interface;

determining the one or more recovery addresses to be recovered based on the monitoring address in the failure notification; and

performing the recovery operation for the one network interface using the one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface.

12. A system comprising:

a plurality of network interfaces grouped into a plurality of nodes, a monitoring address being assigned to each of the network interfaces such that the monitoring address for each of the network interfaces is on a different subnet than the monitoring addresses for all of the other network interfaces in the same node as that network interface;

means for periodically sending a monitoring message to each of the network interfaces via the monitoring addresses in order to determine the functionality of the network interfaces; and

means for, if no monitoring message is received within a predetermined period, performing a recovery operation for one of the network interfaces using one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface,

wherein each of the network interfaces is assigned one or more recovery addresses that each are different than its monitoring address.

13. The system of claim 12, further comprising means for automatically generating the monitoring addresses for the network interfaces.

14. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for automatically generating includes means for generating the monitoring address for the first network interface in each node by adding the base address to a node index for that node.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the means for automatically generating further includes means for generating the monitoring address for the second network interface in each node using the node index for that node in the formula:

((network ID+subnet increment) AND host ID)+node index,

wherein the network ID and the host ID are based on the base address and the subnet mask, and

the subnet increment is based on the subnet mask.

16. The system of claim 12, wherein the means for performing includes:

means for, if no monitoring message is received within the predetermined period, sending a failure notification with the monitoring address of the one network interface;

means for determining the one or more recovery addresses to be recovered based on the monitoring address in the failure notification; and

means for performing the recovery operation for the one network interface using the one or more recovery addresses of the one network interface.
