Abstract

A system and method for incorporating message catalogs in remote modules. The system and method comprise a container server that identifies one or more modules for use with a container document, receives a module specification from a remote server, and serves the container document with module data based on the module specification, wherein the module data comprises a message reference that identifies a message catalog.

Claims

1. A remote module system comprising:

a container server that identifies one or more modules for use with a container document, receives a module specification from a remote server, and serves the container document with module data based on the module specification;

wherein the module data comprises a message reference that identifies a message catalog.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the message reference identifies a message catalog that is embedded within the module data.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the message reference is a uniform resource locator (URL).

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the module specification further comprises a placeholder for message substitution.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the placeholder comprises a text sequence type placeholder.

6. The system of claim 4 wherein the placeholder comprises a JS API to access messages.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog comprises data in a data structured format.

8. The system of claim 7 wherein the data structured format comprises an extensible markup language format.

9. The system of claim 7 wherein the data structured format comprises JSON.

10. The system of claim 7 wherein the data structured format comprises a binary format.

11. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog comprises translated text data.

12. The system of claim 11 wherein the translated text data is provided by a machine.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the translated text data is provided by a translation service.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the translation service is provided over a network.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog is accessible over a network.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein the network comprises the Internet.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog is searchable over a network.

18. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog and the module specification are hosted by a single server system.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog is module-specific.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein the message catalog is used by more than one module.

21. The system of claim 1 wherein the container document displays the module data inline.

22. The system of claim 1 wherein the container document displays the module data in an IFRAME.

23. The system of claim 1 wherein the module specification contains at least one location reference for every message catalog.

24. A remote module method comprising:

identifying one or more modules for use with a container document;

receiving a module specification from a remote server;

providing module data in the container document based on the module specification; and

wherein the module data comprises a message reference that identifies a message catalog.

25. A system comprising:

a receiving server that receives requests from a requestor for a message catalog of a particular language for use with a module;

a retrieving server for retrieving a message catalog in a first language;

a translator for translating a message catalog to the requested language if the first language is different from the requested language; and

a transmitting server for transmitting the message catalog or the message reference of the message catalog to the requester.

26. A method comprising:

receiving a request from a requester for a message catalog of a particular requested language for use with a module;

retrieving a message catalog in a first language;

translating a message catalog to the requested language if the first language is not the same as the requested language; and

transmitting the message catalog or the message reference of the message catalog to the requester.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein retrieving a message catalog in a first language further comprises identifying the appropriate message catalog for the module based on language and country.

28. The method of claim 26 wherein the system further comprises performing a message substitution.

29. The method of claim 26 wherein the system further comprises outputting a message from a message catalog.

30. The method of claim 26 wherein the system further comprises analyzing a module to form a subset of messages from the message catalog.

31. A system comprising:

a module specification server that serves a module specification to a remote container server for use in generating module data in a container document;

wherein the module specification server also serves a message catalog for use with the module modification.
