Abstract

In accordance with the present disclosure a user can return to a previously viewed/archived version of a web-page when the content of the currently available webpage is different from the archived content. To facilitate such an interaction, a browser can archive displayed versions of web pages and their network address and when a user makes new request for the web page, the browser can determine that there is an archived version with the requested network address. When an archived version of the web page exists, the browser can prompt the user to determine if the user wants to “re-display” the contents of a previously displayed web page or if the user wants to display the current contents provided by the website server.

Claims

1. A method for providing archived content to a user comprising:

displaying a first content received in a first download;

storing at least a portion of the first content on a client machine;

receiving a second download having at least some content that is different than the first content; and

querying the user to determine whether the user wants to display the first content in response to determining that the second download comprises at least some content that is different than the first content.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising comparing the first content to the second download to identify the at least some content.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the first content in response to user input and displaying the content of the second download in response to user input.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining that the second download comprises at least some content that is different comprises storing user selected portions of content and determining that the user selected portions of content have changed.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising storing user entered data and adding the data to the first content.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein querying comprises prompting the user in response to a predetermined preference.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the first content comprises displaying a selectable link.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the first content comprises displaying the content in a browser environment.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the storing is performed in response to an activation of a back instruction.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein storing comprises storing in response to an activation of a submit form instruction.

11. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium having a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

display a first content received in a first download;

store at least a portion of the first content on a client machine;

receive a second download having at least some content that is different than the first content; and

query the user to determine whether the user wants to display the first content in response to determining that the second download comprises at least some content that is different than the first content.

12. The computer program product of claim 11, further comprising a computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to compare the first contents to the second download to identify the at least some content.

13. The computer program product of claim 11, further comprising a computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to display the first contents in response to a user request and to display the contents of the second download in response to a user request to display the second download.

14. The computer program product of claim 11, further comprising a computer readable program when executed on a computer, causes the computer to store user entered data.

15. A system for archiving comprising:

a graphical user interface to display downloaded information and to request a download of additional information;

a content archiver to store the downloaded information locally;

a content comparator to compare the displayed information with the additional information to determine whether the displayed information is different than the additional information, wherein a user can select to display one of the downloaded information and the additional information on the graphical user interface.

16. The system of claim 15, further comprising a cache file storage module to store the downloaded information.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the graphical user interface comprises a browser to accept a user selection.

18. The system of claim 15, wherein the graphical user interface provides a pop-up window with a selectable feature in response to a user input.

19. A method for providing archived content to a user comprising:

retrieving current content as provided by a server in response to a user request, the server providing an indicator that archived content related to the current content exists;

querying the user to determine whether the user wants to display the archived content based on the indicator; and

retrieving archived content in response to user input.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the querying is activated based on an indicator that the archived content was previously downloaded.
