Abstract

A method of providing advertising from a central database server connected to a global computer network to distributed sites via interactive television. A representative icon is presented to a subscriber on a television screen indicating an advertisement. When a the icon is selected, an advertisement information detail is retrieved from storage in a local memory, or from the central database server and presented to the subscriber on the television screen.

17. A method of using a communications device that is disposed at a user location and communicatively coupled to the Internet and to a television having a television display for displaying television programming, comprising:

receiving a plurality of advertising icons via the Internet and wherein each of the plurality of advertising icons is representative of a company or product;

receiving one or more advertisements associated with the plurality of advertising icons;

displaying the plurality of advertising icons overlaying television programming displayed on the television display and wherein the displayed advertising icon is not integrated with an electronic program guide;

receiving a user input indicating that a displayed advertising icon has been selected;

in response to receiving the user input, displaying an advertisement associated with the selected advertising icon on the television display; and

wherein the associated advertisement displayed is targeted based on information of the user.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein displaying the advertisement comprises resizing the television programming displayed on the television display and displaying the advertisement in a distinct frame on the television display.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the advertisement displayed is targeted based on location information of the user.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein displaying the advertisement comprises displaying the advertisement in place of the television programming being displayed.

21. The method of claim 17, further comprising in response to receiving the user input, transmitting a request via the Internet for one or more advertisements.

22. The method of claim 17, further comprising in response to receiving the user input, retrieving the associated advertisement from a memory.

23. The method of claim 17, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons comprises superimposing each of the advertising icons as a semi-transparent icon over the television programming.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons further comprises sequentially displaying the advertising icons.

25. The method of claim 17, further comprising providing the user an incentive for viewing an advertisement.

26. The method of claim 17, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to the user location via the same communication medium.

27. The method of claim 17, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to the user location via different communication mediums.

28. The method of claim 17, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons comprises sequentially displaying the advertising icons.

29. A method of providing advertisements using a plurality of communications devices disposed at a plurality of user locations and wherein the communications devices are communicatively coupled to a television and to the Internet, comprising:

transmitting a plurality of advertising icons via the Internet to each of the plurality of communications devices and wherein each of the plurality of advertising icons is representative of a company or product;

transmitting one or more advertisements to each of the plurality of communications devices and wherein each advertising icon has an associated advertisement;

wherein the advertising icons are configured to be displayed overlaying television programming on a display of the television and not integrated with an electronic program guide;

wherein the advertisement associated with each advertising icon is targeted based on information of the user; and

wherein each of the communications devices is configured to receive a user input indicating that a displayed advertising icon has been selected and, in response, to display the associated advertisement on the display of the television.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein at least some of the one or more advertisement are configured to be displayed in place of the television programming being displayed.

31. The method of claim 29, further comprising receiving a request via the Internet for one or more advertisements from a communications device.

34. The method of claim 29, wherein said transmitting one or more advertisements is not in response to receiving requests from the plurality of communications devices.

35. The method of claim 29, wherein the plurality of advertising icons are configured to be superimposed as a semi-transparent icon over the television programming.

36. The method of claim 35, wherein the advertising icons are configured to be displayed sequentially.

37. The method of claim 29, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to at least some of the user locations via the same communication medium.

38. The method of claim 29, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to at least some of the user locations via different communication mediums.

39. The method of claim 29, wherein at least some of the one or more advertisements are targeted based on user information.

40. The method of claim 29, wherein the advertising icons are configured to be displayed sequentially.

41. The method of claim 29, wherein at least some of the one or more advertisements are targeted based on location information of the user.

42. The method of claim 29, further comprising providing the user an incentive for viewing an advertisement.

43. The method of claim 29, wherein said transmitting one or more advertisements is performed intermittently and not in response requests from the plurality of communications devices.

44. A method of using a communications device that is disposed at a user location and communicatively coupled to a television, comprising:

receiving a plurality of advertising icons and wherein each of the plurality of advertising icons is representative of a company or product;

receiving one or more advertisements and wherein each of the one or more advertisements is associated with at least one of the plurality of advertising icons;

displaying an advertising icon overlaying television programming on a display of the television and wherein the displayed advertising icon is not integrated with an electronic program guide;

wherein the advertisement associated with the displayed advertising icon is targeted based on information of the user;

receiving a user input indicating that the displayed advertising icon has been selected; and

in response to receiving said user input, displaying an advertisement associated with the selected advertising icon on the display of the television.

45. The method of claim 44, wherein displaying the advertisement comprises resizing the television programming displayed on the television display and displaying the advertisement in a distinct frame on the television display.

46. The method of claim 44, wherein the advertisement displayed is targeted based on location information of the user.

47. The method of claim 44, wherein displaying the advertisement comprises displaying the advertisement in place of the television programming being displayed.

48. The method of claim 44, further comprising in response to receiving the user input, transmitting a request for one or more advertisements.

49. The method of claim 44, further comprising in response to receiving the user input, retrieving the associated advertisement from a memory.

50. The method of claim 44, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons comprises superimposing each of the advertising icons as a semi-transparent icon over the television programming.

51. The method of claim 50, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons further comprises sequentially displaying the advertising icons.

52. The method of claim 44, further comprising providing the user an incentive for viewing an advertisement.

53. The method of claim 44, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to the user location via the same communication medium.

54. The method of claim 44, wherein the television programming and the one or more advertisements are communicated to the user location via different communication mediums.

55. The method of claim 44, wherein displaying the plurality of advertising icons comprises sequentially displaying the advertising icons.

56. A communication device configured to be communicatively coupled to a television at a user location;

comprising;

a user input device operable to receive a user input;

a memory;

a first port configured to communicate via the Internet;

a processor in communication with said memory and said first port and configured to receive communications from said user input device; and

wherein said processor is configured to;

receive an advertising icon and an associated advertisement via said first port and wherein the advertising icon is representative of a company or product;

store said advertising icon in said memory;

display the advertising icon overlaying television programming on a display of the television and wherein the displayed advertising icon is not integrated with an electronic program guide;

receive via the user input device a user selection of the displayed advertising icon, and

in response to the user selection, display the advertisement associated with the selected advertising icon on the display of the television.

57. The device of claim 56, wherein said first port is further configured to receive television programming.

58. The device of claim 56, further comprising a second port in communication with said processor and configured to receive television programming.

59. The device of claim 56, wherein said first port comprises a cable modem.

60. The device of claim 56, wherein the associated advertisement is targeted based on information of the user.

61. The device of claim 56, wherein the associated advertisement is targeted based on location information of the user.

62. The device of claim 56, wherein in response to said user selection, said processor is configured to transmit a request for the associated advertisement via said first port.

63. The device of claim 56, wherein said processor is configured to display the television programming on the television display in a first frame and to display the advertisement in a second frame.

64. The device of claim 56, wherein said processor is configured to sequentially display a plurality of different advertising icons.

65. The device of claim 56, wherein the associated advertisement is received without transmission of a request for an advertisement.
