Abstract

The present invention provides an adjustable cheek rest for installation on the butt stock of a firearm, the cheek rest having an elongate comb adapted to conform to the top portion of the butt stock, the comb being supported on a rail that is fixed to, or removably mounted to, one side of the butt stock. The cheek rest comb is adjustable both longitudinally and vertically with respect to the butt stock to suit the needs of a particular shooter, the comb being attached to the butt stock by a fixture slidably engaging the rail to permit longitudinal adjustment and slidably engaging the comb to permit vertical adjustment. Once adjusted, the comb may be secured in a desired longitudinal and vertical location. A removable rail is also provided for mounting the cheek rest and/or other accessories to a firearm butt stock not having a fixed accessory mounting rail.

Claims

1. An adjustable cheek rest for the butt stock of a firearm, comprising:

a comb adapted to substantially conform to the underlying butt stock;

means for adjustably securing the comb in a substantially vertical direction with respect to the butt stock;

means for adjustably securing the comb in a substantially longitudinal direction with respect to the butt stock.

2. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 1, wherein the means for adjustably securing the comb in the substantially vertical direction comprises:

a fixture mounted to the butt stock, the fixture having a generally vertically extending arm including an elongate aperture;

a stud extending outwardly from a surface of the comb, the stud being adapted to slidably engage the elongate aperture of the fixture when the surface of the comb is adjacent to a rear face of the fixture;

a fastening means adapted to engage the stud, the fastening means having an enlarged cap, whereby the fastening means may be loosened to enable the comb to be repositioned substantially vertically with respect to the butt stock and whereby the fastening means may be tightened to clamp the arm of the fixture between the cap and the comb to secure the comb in a fixed vertical position with respect to the butt stock.

3. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 2, wherein the stud comprises internal threads and the fastening means comprises an externally threaded bolt adapted to engage the threads of the stud.

4. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 2, wherein:

the surface of the comb comprises one or more recessed slots extending in a generally vertical direction; and

the rear face of the fixture comprises an equal number of rearwardly protruding guide tabs adapted to engage the corresponding recessed slots for guiding the comb as it is moved vertically with respect to the butt stock.

5. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 4, wherein the surface of the comb has two recessed slots and the fixture has two rearwardly protruding guide tabs.

6. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 1, wherein the means for adjustably securing the cheek rest in the substantially longitudinal direction comprises:

a generally T-shaped rail mounted to the butt stock, the rail extending in a substantially longitudinal direction; and

a fixture mounted to the comb, the fixture having a generally C-shaped member adapted to slidably receive the generally T-shaped rail.

7. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 6, wherein the rail is integrally affixed to the butt stock.

8. An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 6, wherein the rail is removably attached to the butt stock.

An adjustable cheek rest according to claim 8, wherein the rail is removably secured to the butt stock by fastening means passing through an elongate substantially longitudinal aperture in the butt stock, the fastening means interconnecting the rail to a backing member disposed on an opposite side of the butt stock.

10. An adjustable cheek rest for the butt stock of a firearm, comprising:

a generally U-shaped elongate comb member adapted to substantially conform to the underlying butt stock;

a generally T-shaped rail mounted to the butt stock, the rail extending in a substantially longitudinal direction

a fixture having a generally C-shaped member adapted to slidably receive the generally T-shaped rail and a generally vertically extending arm including an elongate aperture;

a stud extending outwardly from a surface of the comb member, the stud being adapted to slidably engage the elongate aperture of the fixture when the surface of the comb member is adjacent to a rear face of the arm of the fixture;

two recessed slots extending in a generally vertical direction on the surface of the comb member, one slot being disposed on either side of the stud;

two guide tabs protruding rearwardly from the rear face of the arm of the fixture, each rearwardly protruding tab being adapted to engage the corresponding recess slot for guiding the comb member as it is moved vertically with respect to the butt stock; and

fastening means adapted to engage the stud, the fastening means having an enlarged cap, whereby the fastening means may be loosened to enable the comb member to be repositioned substantially vertically with respect to the butt stock and whereby the fastening means may be tightened to clamp the arm of the fixture between the cap and the comb member to secure the comb in a fixed vertical position with respect to the butt stock.

11. A removable rail assembly for mounting an accessory to the butt stock of a firearm, comprising:

an elongate rail having a generally T-shaped cross-section, the rail being disposed on a side of the butt stock and extending in a substantially longitudinal direction along the butt stock;

a backing member disposed on an opposite side of the butt stock;

fastening means for removably interconnecting the rail to the backing member, the fastening means passing through at least one aperture in the butt stock, whereby the rail extends in a substantially longitudinal direction along the butt stock.

12. A removable rail assembly according to claim 11, wherein the fastening means passes through one elongate substantially longitudinal aperture in the butt stock.

13. A removable rail assembly according to claim 11, wherein the rail is configured as a Picatinny rail.

14. A removable rail assembly according to claim 11, wherein the rail is configured as a Weaver rail.
