Abstract

The present invention provides electronic communication devices, methods of forming electrical communication devices, and communications methods. An electronic communication device adapted to receive electronic signals includes: a housing comprising a substrate and an encapsulant; an integrated circuit provided within the housing and comprising transponder circuitry operable to communicate an identification signal responsive to receiving a polling signal; an antenna provided within the housing and being coupled with the transponder circuitry; and a ground plane provided within the housing and being spaced from the antenna and configured to shield some of the electronic signals from the antenna and reflect others of the electronic signals towards the antenna. A method of forming an electronic signal communication device includes providing a substrate having a support surface; providing a conductive layer adjacent at least a portion of the support surface; providing a dielectric layer over the conductive layer; providing an antenna over the dielectric layer; coupling an integrated circuit with the antenna; and encapsulating the antenna, the dielectric layer, and the integrated circuit using a flowable encapsulant.

66. A radio frequency identification (RFID) tag comprising:

a flexible substrate;

an RF shield on the substrate;

an antenna on the substrate and isolated from the RF shield; and

communications circuitry communicatively coupled to the antenna.

67. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the communications circuitry includes an integrated circuit.

68. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the RF shield is electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

69. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the RF shield is electrically coupled to ground.

70. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the RF shield is electrically floating.

71. The RFID tag of claim 66, further comprising a battery electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

72. The RFID tag of claim 66, further comprising a dielectric layer over at least a portion of the RF shield, the antenna being on the dielectric layer.

73. The RFID tag of claim 72, further comprising conductive traces printed on the dielectric layer, the conductive traces forming the antenna and electrically coupling the antenna to the communications circuitry.

74. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the communications circuitry comprises an active transmitter.

75. The RFID tag of claim 66, wherein the communications circuitry comprises a backscatter device.

76. A method of forming a radio frequency identification (RFID) tag, the method comprising:

providing a substrate;

providing an RF shield over the substrate;

providing an antenna over the substrate; and

providing communications circuitry over the substrate, the communications circuitry being communicatively coupled to the antenna, wherein the antenna is isolated from the RF shield.

77. The method of claim 76, wherein the communications circuitry includes an integrated circuit.

78. The method of claim 76, wherein the RF shield is electrically floating.

79. The method of claim 76, further comprising a battery electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

80. The method of claim 76, wherein the substrate is a flexible substrate.

81. The method of claim 76, wherein the RF shield is electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

82. The method of claim 76, further comprising providing a battery electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

83. The method of claim 76, further comprising providing a dielectric layer over at least a portion of the RF shield, the antenna being on the dielectric layer.

84. The method of claim 83, further comprising providing conductive traces printed on the dielectric layer, the conductive traces forming the antenna and electrically coupling the antenna to the communications circuitry.

85. The method of claim 76, wherein the communications circuitry comprises an active transmitter.

86. The method of claim 76, wherein the communications circuitry comprises a backscatter device.

87. A radio frequency identification (RFID) device comprising:

a substrate having a first side and a second side;

a reflective layer on the second side of the substrate;

an insulating layer on the reflective layer;

an antenna on the insulating layer, wherein the antenna is configured to receive an RF frequency band and the reflective layer reflects the RF frequency band; and

communications circuitry communicatively coupled to the antenna.

88. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the communications circuitry includes an integrated circuit.

89. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the reflective layer is electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

90. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the reflective layer is electrically coupled to ground.

91. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the reflective layer is electrically floating.

92. The RFID device of claim 87, further comprising a battery electrically coupled to the communications circuitry.

93. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the communications circuitry comprises an active transmitter.

94. The RFID device of claim 87, wherein the communications circuitry comprises a backscatter device.

95. The RFID device of claim 87, further comprising conductive traces printed on the insulating layer, the conductive traces forming the antenna and electrically coupling the antenna to the communications circuitry.
