Abstract

Briefly, in accordance with one embodiment, a method of data compression is disclosed.

Claims

1. A method of coding a sequence of data symbols comprising:

(a) forming a code sequence, in which a code includes an exponent value E_i and a residual value R_i, i being an integer numeral; and

(b) for a value of E_i that occurs within a code, generating a positional value within said code sequence representative of said value of E_i.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein i comprises an integer numeral associated with said positional value.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein one or more residual values are grouped together within said sequence so as to follow and/or precede one or more positional values.

4. The method of claim 2, and further comprising:

transmitting or storing said positional value and said residual value as a string.

10. The method of claim 2, wherein said code sequence comprises a Golomb code sequence and said code comprises a Golomb code.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said Golomb code and said positional value comprise representations in a binary format.

12. The method of claim 2, wherein one or more positional values are run length coded.

13. The method of claim 2, wherein said positional values are treated as a further sequence and are further coded.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said further sequence is coded as a Golomb code.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said data symbols are representative of an audio or a video stream.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein, for a selected value of E that occurs within a code, said positional value within said code representative of said value of E comprises i.

5. The method of claim 5, wherein said string is terminated by an end-of-group symbol.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein information representing the length of said string is prefixed to said string.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein information representing the number of exponent values is prefixed to said string.

8. The method of claim 5, wherein a final positional value within said string is followed by a no-more-groups symbol.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein said residual value is specifically associated within said string with its corresponding positional value.

17. A method of coding a sequence of data symbols, a symbol represented in numeric form by a numeral V_i, the method of coding comprising:

(i) for a data symbol;

(a) determining the largest integral value of an exponent E_i for which b^Ei does not exceed V_i, where b is a fixed modulo value; and

(b) calculating a residual R_i=V_i−

b^Ei;

(ii) taking said exponents E_i as a code sequence, and for a value of E_i that occurs, generating a positional value within the code sequence representative of said value of E_i; and

(iii) associating said residuals R_i with said value of E_i.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein said positional value within the code comprises a value associated with the value of i.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein one or more positional values are run length coded.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein said data symbols are representative of an audio or a video stream.

21. An article comprising:

a storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, if executed, further result in performance of a method of coding a sequence of data symbols as follows;

(a) forming a code sequence, in which a code includes an exponent value E_i and a residual value R_i, i being an integer numeral; and

(b) for a value of E_i that occurs within a code, generating a positional value within said code sequence representative of said value of E_i.

22. The article of claim 21, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in:

i comprising an integer numeral associated with said positional value.

23. The article of claim 22, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in:

one or more residual values being grouped together within said sequence so as to follow and/or precede one or more positional values.

24. The article of claim 22, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in:

transmitting or storing said positional value and said residual value as a string.

25. The article of claim 21, wherein, said instructions, if executed, further result in:

for a selected value of E that occurs within a code, said positional value within said code representative of said value of E comprising i.

33. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein said computing platform is further adapted to, for a selected value of E that occurs within a code, assign said positional value within said code representative of said value of E as i.

26. An apparatus comprising:

means for forming a code sequence, in which a code includes an exponent value E_i and a residual value R_i, i being an integer numeral; and

, for a value of E_i that occurs within a code, means for generating a positional value within said code sequence representative of said value of E_i.

27. The apparatus of claim 26, and further comprising means for grouping one or more residual values together within said sequence so as to follow and/or precede one or more positional values.

28. The apparatus of claim 26, wherein aid instructions, if executed, further result in:

transmitting or storing said positional value and said residual value as a string.

29. An apparatus comprising:

a computing platform;

said computing platform adapted to;

form a code sequence, in which a code includes an exponent value E_i and a residual value R_i, i being an integer numeral, and, for a value of E_i that occurs within a code, generate a positional value within said code sequence representative of said value of E_i.

30. The apparatus of claim 29, wherein said computing platform is further adapted to associate the integer numeral i with said positional value.

31. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein said platform is further adapted to group one or more residual values together within said sequence so as to follow and/or precede one or more positional values.

32. The apparatus of claim 30, wherein said computing platform is further adapted to transmit or store said positional value and said residual value as a string.

34. An article comprising:

a storage medium having stored thereon instructions that, if executed, result in performance of a method of coding a sequence of data symbols, a symbol represented in numeric form by a numeral V_i, as follows;

(i) for a data symbol;

(a) determining the largest integral value of an exponent E_i for which b^Ei does not exceed V_i, where b is a fixed modulo value; and

(b) calculating a residual R_i=V_i−

b^Ei;

(iv) taking said exponents E_i as a code sequence, and for a value of E_i that occurs, generating a positional value within the code sequence representative of said value of E_i; and

(v) associating said residuals R_i with said value of E_i.

35. The article of claim 34, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in said positional value within the code comprising a value associated with the value of i.

36. The article of claim 35, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in one or more positional values being run length coded.

37. The article of claim 35, wherein said instructions, if executed, further result in said data symbols being representative of an audio or a video stream.

40. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein said computing platform is adapted to run length code one or more positional values.

38. An apparatus comprising:

a computing platform;

said computing platform adapted to;

for a data symbol, determine the largest integral value of an exponent E_i for which b^Ei does not exceed V_i, where b is a fixed modulo value, and calculate a residual R_i=V_i−

b^Ei;

take said exponents E_i as a code sequence, and, for a value of E_i that occurs, generate a positional value within the code sequence representative of said value of E_i; and

associate said residuals R_i with said value of E_i.

39. The apparatus of claim 38, wherein said computing platform being adapted to assign said positional value within the code a value associated with the value of i.
