Abstract

Data intended to be displayed on a higher resolution display such as a non-interlaced display used as a computer monitor may be converted for display on a lower resolution display such as an interlaced display. The conversion may be done in a way that preserves the intended frame format while enhancing readability. For example, in one embodiment, the frames intended for non-interlaced display may be preserved in size for display in the same frame format on a lower resolution interlaced display. Local magnification may be selectively implemented for particular regions to enhance the readability of those regions. Upon selection, such local magnification may provide pixel loss and color corrections in addition to local magnification. In this way the frame format may be preserved while enhancing readability.

Claims

1. A method of displaying information on an lower resolution display comprising:

receiving data formatted for display on a higher resolution display; and

selectively enlarging a portion of the information on the lower resolution display.

2. The method of claim 1 including converting data formatted for display on higher resolution non-interlaced display, for display on a lower resolution interlaced display.

3. The method of claim 2 including preserving the display size of the non-interlaced information so that a frame of non-interlaced information is displayed as a frame of interlaced information.

4. The method of claim 1 including identifying regions of likely pixel loss.

5. The method of claim 4 including locating horizontal lines of less than a predetermined thickness and increasing the thickness of such lines.

6. The method of claim 2 including identifying areas of likely color distortion in converting from non-interlaced to interlaced display.

7. The method of claim 6 including locating high saturation colors which are sufficiently close to one another to result in color distortion.

8. The method of claim 6 including correcting for hue differences between interlaced and non-interlaced displays.

9. An article comprising a medium for storing instructions that cause a processor based system to:

receive data formatted for a display on a higher resolution display; and

selectively enlarge a portion of the data displayed on a lower resolution display.

10. The article of claim 9 including instructions that cause a processor based system to convert data for display on a higher resolution non-interlaced display for display on a lower resolution interlaced display.

11. The article of claim 10 including instructions that cause a processor based system to automatically enlarge a portion of the interlaced display.

12. The article of claim 11 further including instructions that cause a processor based system to automatically enlarge a region adjacent to a text caret.

13. The article of claim 9 including instructions that cause a processor based system to receive information from the user indicating a region to be selectively enlarged.

14. A processor based system comprising:

a processor; and

a memory coupled to said processor, said memory storing instructions that cause the selective enlargement of data intended for display on a higher resolution display when said data is displayed on a lower resolution display.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein said processor is adapted to convert data formatted for display on a higher resolution, non-interlaced display for display on a lower resolution interlaced display.

16. The system of claim 14 including a remote control unit adapted to provide input signals for said processor.

17. The system of claim 14 including a television receiver coupled to said processor.

18. The system of claim 14 wherein said system is a set-top computer system.
