Abstract

Systems, methods, and machine-readable media are disclosed for using past presence information to help determine a current presence of a principal. In one embodiment, determining presence of a principal on one or more devices or communication channels can comprise periodically querying a plurality of devices to determine a presence of the principal on one or more of the plurality of devices. An indication of the presence of the principal on the one or more of the plurality of devices can be received and presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal on the one or more devices can be stored. A request for a presence of the principal can be received and, in response, the stored presence information can be retrieved. The stored presence information and, in some cases, current presence information can be provided in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

Claims

1. A method of determining presence of a principal on one or more devices or communication channels, the method comprising:

determining a presence of a principal; and

storing presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the presence of the principal comprises querying a plurality of end devices.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the presence of the principal comprises querying a plurality of servers.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the presence of the principal comprises querying a service that interacts with the principal.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the presence of the principal comprises querying a communication channel

6. The method of claim 1, wherein storing presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal comprises storing one or more presence attributes related to the presence of the principal.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the presence attributes include a time at which the presence of the principal was determined.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein storing presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal comprises storing an identification of the one or more communication channels.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein storing presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal comprises storing an identification of the one or more devices.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request for a presence of the principal; and

retrieving the stored presence information.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising providing the stored presence information in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising determining a current presence for the principal.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising providing the stored presence information and the current presence in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising determining a relevance of the stored presence information and providing the relevance with the stored presence information in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein determining the relevance of the stored presence information is based on a time since the stored presence information was received.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein determining the relevance of the stored presence information is further based on a device type for each of the one or more of the plurality of devices.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising ordering the stored presence information based on relevance.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a relevance of the stored presence information; and

in response to a change of the relevance of the presence information, updating one or more subscribers to the presence information.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein determining a relevance of the stored presence information is based on a time since the presence information was determined.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein updating one or more subscribers to the presence information comprises determining new presence information and sending the new presence information to the one or more subscribers.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein determining the presence of the principal comprises periodically determining the presence of the principal.

22. A method of determining presence of a principal on one or more devices or communication channels, the method comprising:

receiving a request for a presence of a principal; and

retrieving stored presence information related to the principal and indicating a past presence on one or more of a plurality of devices.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising providing the stored presence information related to the principal in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

24. The method of claim 22, further comprising determining a current presence for the principal.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising providing the stored presence information and the current presence in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

26. The method of claim 22, further comprising determining a relevance of the stored presence information and providing the relevance with the stored presence information in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein determining the relevance of the stored presence information is based on a time since the stored presence information was collected.

28. The method of claim 27, wherein determining the relevance of the stored presence information is further based on a device type for each of the one or more devices.

29. The method of claim 22, wherein receiving the request for the presence of the principal comprises periodically receiving the request for the presence of the principal

30. A system for determining presence of a principal on one or more devices or communication channels, the system comprising:

a repository; and

a presence enabler communicatively coupled with the repository and adapted to determine a presence of the principal, receive an indication of the presence of the principal, and store presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal in the repository.

31. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to periodically determine a relevance of the stored presence information and in response to a change of the relevance of the presence information, update one or more subscribers to the presence information.

32. The system of claim 31, wherein the presence enabler determines a relevance of the stored presence information based on a time since the presence information was determined.

33. The system of claim 32, wherein the presence enabler updates one or more subscribers to the presence information by determining new presence information and sending the new presence information to the one or more subscribers.

34. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler determines the presence of the principal by querying a plurality of end devices

35. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler determines the presence of the principal by querying a plurality of servers.

36. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler determines the presence of the principal by querying a service that interacts with the principal.

37. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler determines the presence of the principal by querying a communication channel

38. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler stores presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal by storing one or more presence attributes related to the presence of the principal.

39. The system of claim 38, wherein the presence attributes include a time at which the presence of the principal was determined.

40. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler stores presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal by storing an identification of the one or more communication channels.

41. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler stores presence information related to the indication of the presence of the principal by storing an identification of the one or more devices.

42. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to receive a request for a presence of the principal and retrieve the stored presence information.

43. The system of claim 42, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to provide the stored presence information in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

44. The system of claim 42, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to determine a current presence for the principal.

45. The system of claim 44, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to provide the stored presence information and the current presence in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

46. The system of claim 45, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to determine a relevance of the stored presence information and providing the relevance with the stored presence information in response to the request for the presence of the principal.

47. The system of claim 46, wherein the presence enabler determines the relevance of the stored presence information based on a time since the stored presence information was received.

48. The system of claim 47, wherein the presence enabler determines the relevance of the stored presence information further based on a device type for each of the one or more of the plurality of devices.

49. The system of claim 30, wherein the presence enabler is further adapted to periodically determine the presence of the principal
